This review offers some policy and governance recommendations to achieve the region’s desired transition from a model of incremental innovation in manufacturing, to a model increasingly based on science and other forms of knowledge.

Two detailed studies of the Canterbury region in New Zealand and the Sosnowiec region in Poland have been released recently.
The analysis in these two countries shows clear evidence of the specific needs of small and medium enterprises, beyond cultural or geographical disparities. The study so far also points out to the importance of knowledge intensive service activities (KISA) as an advanced learning environment for SMEs.

NComVA and OECD proudly announce the release of Dynamic Histogram.This improved version of OECD Regional eXplorer (V3.7) contains new features, including: a dynamic histogram to plot regions and countries, focus on selected regions and follow trends over time; improved Table lens for negative and positive data values; improved high resolution image capture; and wider user control to customize the display, share the results and save documents.

The Netherlands is successfully transforming the way it manages specific areas of the country. Investments in infrastructure and housing are now better coordinated and focus on strong city-regions. These place-based policies strengthen regions in the Netherlands, complement other national initiatives, and fit with the growing importance of cities as economic drivers. However, accessibility and housing remain major challenges, according to OECD’s new National place-based policies in the Netherlands.
