Press Release - Ministers meet in May for Summit on Seamless Transport

Registrations are now open for the 2012 Summit of the International Transport Forum, a leading global transport policy platform linked to the OECD. The Summit will take place on 2-4 May in the city of Leipzig, Germany. It will bring together ministers, industry leaders and top experts from the Forum’s 53 member countries and beyond. The theme of the 2012 Summit is “Seamless Transport: Making Connections”.

Trends in Transport Infrastructure Investment 1995-2009

The July edition of our Statistics Brief looks at trends in transport infrastructure investment and maintenance spending from 1995 to 2009. The data shows record investment levels in Central and Eastern European countries, with 7.6% growth in 2008/9, amounting to 2.0% of GDP (2009). In Western Europe and North America, the GDP share of investment in inland transport infrastructure has remained almost constant over the past decade.  

New Study on Car Subsidy Schemes

China to Join International Transport Forum

China has officially declared its intention to join the International Transport Forum.

The Vice-Minister for Transport, Mr. GAO Hongfeng, made the announcement during the annual summit of Transport Ministers from the International Transport Forum's 52 current member countries in Leipzig on Thursday 26 May 2011.

Ministers elect new Secretary General

Carole Coune, 42, from Belgium is the new Secretary General of the International Transport Forum. Transport Ministers from 52 member countries elected Ms. Coune to succeed Irishman Jack Short at their annual summit in Leipzig, on 26 May. Ms. Coune is presently the top civil servant of Belgium's Ministry of Transport. She holds a law degree from the Université de Liège and had a distinguished career in the rail sector. "Carole Coune is an able leader with broad experience and a profound understanding of the complex issues that transport faces", said outgoing Secretary General Jack Short.

Statistics Brief: Recovery Continues in Global Freight Transport - Uncertainties Remain

Lessons from the Breakdown: Making Transport More Reliable

The Christmas chaos in airports, roads and rail lines was the second major international transport breakdown in 2010. In April 2010, a volcanic ash cloud from Iceland grounded European air traffic. This time, snow and ice halted traffic, again with devastating effect. Nature's vagaries are natural enemy of transport. But there are other large-scale risks, like terrorism. The September 2001 attack as well as others in London, Moscow and Madrid showed how truly catastrophic the results can be and how vulnerable we are.

Future Car Challenge: The Race for Fuel Economy

Driving from Brighton to London using as little energy as possible was the task set for 63 vehicles participating in the first "Future Car Challenge" on 6 November, organised by Britain's Royal Automobile Club (RAC). The Global Fuel Economy Initiative (GFEI), of which the International Transport Forum is a partner, entered two cars for the 60 mile event - and won.

Green Growth in Transport

Green growth is a new strategy to decouple the inverse relationship between economic growth and environmental preservation. In a joint event in Paris, the International Transport Forum and the Korean Transport Institute (KOTI) address the issue of growth in transport.
