Saluant l’adoption du Cadre pour une croissance forte, durable et équilibrée par les chefs d’État et de gouvernement réunis auhourd’hui à Pittsburgh pour le sommet du G20, le Secrétaire général de l’OCDE, M. Angel Gurría, a déclaré que les nouvelles sources d’emploi et de croissance indispensables à une reprise soutenue de l’économie mondiale ne se concrétiseront que si les grandes économies de la planète mettent en place les politiques structurelles adéquates.

Financial services firms must make sure their customers understand what they are letting themselves in for when they sign up for mortgages, consumer loans and other products, under new OECD guidelines designed to avoid a repeat of the sub-prime mortgage crisis and ensuing credit crunch that sent the world economy into recession.

Government provision of a safety net for financial institutions has been a key element of the policy response to the current crisis. Existing guarantees have been expanded and new ones introduced, in particular related to bank liabilities. This OECD article , updating and broadening a previous one on deposit insurance discusses various issues that arise from such guarantees. Potential competitive distortions, appropriate pricing and exit strategies, especially where unlimited guarantees have been extended, are some of the main issues raised.

This conference, jointly organised by OECD and IOPS, took place on 27-28 April 2005 in Bangkok, Thailand. It aimed to provide an international forum for the discussion on specific policy issues and challenges in the implementation of pension reforms in Asia, with a particular focus to be laid on the reform process in Thailand and on “best practice” regulatory mechanisms used in the OECD countries to ensure efficient and appropriate pension provision under diversified approaches in the design of the retirement schemes.
