To eliminate barriers to competition, governments can use the approach developed in the OECD’s Competition Assessment Toolkit. The Toolkit is a method for identifying unnecessary restraints on market activities and developing alternative, less restrictive measures that still achieve government policy objectives.

In 2009, Colombia celebrates 50 years of competition law. The Peer Review of Competition Law and Policy in Colombia , jointly published by OECD and the IDB, assesses the development and application of Colombia’s law over the last few years and the expected outcomes of its reform earlier this year. Opening the 100th meeting of the competition committee, Mr. Gurría reminded that competition is vital for economic growth. It stimulates efficiency and higher productivity, it disciplines managers, it reinforces incentives for innovation, and it speeds up the adjustment to change. He also mentioned OECD countries that have implemented pro-competition reforms have seen higher growth rates and lower unemployment than those who failed to reform. They have also proved to be more flexible and resilient to economic shocks.

In presenting the Competition Assessment Toolkit, Angel Gurría noted Mexico's substantial progress in developing competition in its economy over the past 15 years, and that there are strategic sectors still insulated from a competitive environment and in which undue restrictions prevail.

Angel Gurría, se rendra en Inde les 3-4 décembre pour y rencontrer de hauts responsables politiques, participer à un symposium consacré aux perspectives économiques mondiales et à l’économie indienne et présenter un nouvel examen de l’OCDE sur les politiques de l’Inde en matière d’investissement.

Taking place in Paris, the 9th OECD Global Forum on Competition will focus on competition, state aids and subsidies, as well as on collusion and corruption in public procurement. Participants will also discuss a peer review of competition law and policy in Brazil.

The 8th OECD Global Forum on Competition brought together senior competition officials from around the world to discuss the importance of competition and the role of competition authorities in the global economy, including: potential conflicts between competition policy and national champions; the impact of the informal economy on competitive markets; the balance between the public interest and competition policy in times of economic crisis; and how young competition agencies can best learn from more experienced colleagues.
