Chile’s economy has strengthened over the last 20 years. Yet, to date Chilean regions have not been able to fully utilise their assets and reach their growth potential, limiting national capacity for growth. An OECD Territorial Review of Chile recommends that Chile adopt a stronger regional approach to economic development in order to better exploit opportunities and improve the country’s overall performance.

A ce jour, les régions du Chili n’ont pas pleinement exploité leurs atouts pour atteindre leur potentiel de croissance, ce qui limite la capacité de croissance du Chili. L’examen territorial de Chili recommande une approche régionale plus soutenue pour mieux exploiter les différentes opportunités des régions et pour améliorer la performance globale du pays.

The launch of OECD Review of Regional Innovation: 15 Mexican States was held in Mexico city on 16th June 2009. The Secretary-General as well as national and state public officials participated in the presentation and discussion which had record attendance.

Speaking at the ministerial meeting of the territorial development policy committee, Mr. Gurría affirmed that urban and rural regions have a core role to play in promoting sustainable growth. The earthquake in L’Aquila, Italy, killed almost 300 people and destroyed a large part of the built environment, as well as essential infrastructure networks. International experts and policy practitioners from around the world discussed and assessed policy options to restore and re-launch the regional economy which was severely hit by the earthquake.

Government leaders, policy makers and practitioners discussed the impact of regional policy, present and future perspectives, at an international conference on “Regional Policy around the World”, held in Porto, Portugal, 29 September 2008. This conference was organised by the Portuguese Ministry of Environment, Spatial Planning and Regional Development, in co-operation with the OECD. On this occasion the report “OECD Territorial Review of Portugal” was officially launched.
