The Collection of Case Studies on Risk Assessments of Combined Exposures to Multiple Chemicals (Combined Exposures) can now be searched on eChemPortal. To date, it gathers 5 case studies from the WHO OECD ILSI/HESI International Workshop on Risk Assessment of Combined Exposures to Multiple Chemicals. The Australian NICNAS Other database contains Hazard assessment reports on existing chemicals other than Priority Existing Chemical assessments.

On 7-8 September 2011, the OECD organized a workshop in Paris on metals specificities in environmental risk assessment. Concepts of bioavailability, effects assessments, fate and bioaccumulation specific to metals were presented with illustrative examples. Participants generally agreed with proposed concepts and formulated recommendations for further work. A report will be available in a few weeks.

Three new Emission Scenario Documents (ESDs) on the releases of chemicals from the Application of Radiation Curable Coatings, Inks, and Adhesives, from the Use of Metalworking Fluids, and from Water-Based Operations at Industrial and Institutional Laundries are now available. The ESD on Coating Application via Spray-Painting in the Automotive Refinishing Industry from 2004 was revised. ESDs describe methods for estimating emissions of chemicals from various industry sectors and/or from uses of chemicals. Including these new documents, OECD has so far published 27 ESDs.

A guidance document for importing databases into the OECD QSAR Toolbox is now available. The QSAR Toolbox is a software application intended to be used by governments, industry and other stakeholders to fill gaps in (eco)toxicity data needed for assessing the hazards of chemicals. This new document specifically provides guidance on how users can import their own proprietary experimental data into the Toolbox and use them to fill data gaps by read-across or trend analysis.

One of the major new features in version 2.1 of the OECD QSAR Toolbox is the availability of estimates of pKa for more than 100000 chemicals. Following an agreement with the company ChemAxon, pKa estimates have been generated with Chemaxon’s pKa calculator and stored in the Toolbox. The availability of these estimates will greatly enhance the potential of the Toolbox to predict the behaviour of chemicals in the environment as well as their effects in animals and humans.
