Launch of the OECD Report “Managing Water for All: an OECD Perspective on Pricing and Financing”

One billion people cannot get clean drinking water and 2.5 billion lack access to basic sanitation which cause 1.5 million preventable child deaths per year. While addressing the emergency of the current crisis, we must not forget that water is the most essential good and we should find new and innovative approaches to allow everyone access to water and sanitation, according to the OECD Secretary-General.

The Financial and Economic Crisis and Water

The current crisis provides an impetus to push forward difficult reform, an opportunity that should not be wasted for the water sector, according to Angel Gurría. He affirmed that there were huge opportunities for job-creating and “shovel ready” investments in the water sector, particularly for water saving and the rehabilitation of networks, which require relatively short design and construction planning, compared to other types of infrastructure.

In his introductory remarks to the Global Forum on Sustainable Development: Financing and Pricing Water, M. Gurría declared that good water management is so fundamental to human and economic development, and to the maintenance of ecosystems, that we cannot afford to fail.

The conference will discuss the key policy conclusions and recommendations emerging from the two-year OECD Horizontal Water Programme. This report will be finalised in light of the discussion at this meeting and launched at the 5th World Water Forum, which will be held in Istanbul, 16-22 March 2009. Expert meeting to discuss OECD and World Bank methodologies to support the development of strategic financial plans for the water supply and sanitation sector in developing countries
