According to industry and government officials at the OECD’s Steel Committee meeting in Paris on 8-9 June 2009, conditions for a recovery in demand could begin to be seen towards the end of the year.

Driven by buoyant steel-intensive economic activity including construction and infrastructure building in many developing economies, global apparent consumption of steel has increased at an average pace of more than 7% per annum since 2002 to reach a record level of 1.113 billion tonnes last year.

Les perspectives pour 2007 devraient rester relativement favorables, mais une baisse du dynamisme de l'économie mondiale devrait entraîner un ralentissement de la croissance de la demande et de la production, selon les représentants de l'industrie sidérurgique et des gouvernements qui ont participé à la réunion du Comité de l'acier à Paris les 7 8 novembre 2006.
