Près de deux milliards de personnes travaillent dans le secteur informel. Ces travailleurs sont mal payés, n’ont pas de contrat de travail ni de prestations sociales. Dans le contexte de la crise économique actuelle, dont l’une des conséquences pourrait être la perte d’emplois dans le secteur formel, L’Emploi informel dans les pays en développement : une normalité indépassable ? donne des clefs aux décideurs pour faire face à ce défi et stimuler la création d’emplois de meilleure qualité pour tous.

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, the OECD Development Centre presents a new index to track causes of gender inequality. Drawing on 12 innovative variables, the Social Institutions and Gender Index (SIGI) explains why women in many developing countries are deprived of social and economic development. In countries with high SIGI values, building more schools or giving micro-credit to women risk being ineffective when traditions and social norms prevent girls from leaving the house alone or accessing land, technology or information.

The OECD's Development Centre measures discrimintation that restricts women's ability to access resources in 102 developing countries. The centre will present this new measure on 5 March 2009 at the Commission on the Status of Women at the United Nations.

The current economic crisis has deep implications for employment across the planet. It brings to an end a period of relatively strong and sustained growth, which was accompanied by the creation of many new jobs. World employment in 2007 was almost one third higher compared with 1990.

Gender inequality has multiple facets, including both overt and more hidden instances of discrimination. In the framework of the 2009 session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), the Development Centre will launch a new composite index shedding light on inequalities that are based on social norms and traditions.

On 17-19 September, we participated in an international conference organised by the Böll Foundation (Germany). Our paper on "Migration Management: The Development Countries' Perspective" stimulated a lively debate on how to improve the development impact in migrant sending regions.

The event, which will be hosted by the OECD Washington Centre, will discuss the link between gender equality and economic growth, the impact of social norms and culture on gender equality, and innovative ways to promote knowledge.
