Broadband and networked ICTs are important in meeting health, demographic and environmental challenges, and policy plays an important role in expanding their use and enhancing their impact.

Broadband subscriptions reached 235 million in December 2008, equivalent to 20 subscribers per 100 inhabitants. Denmark, the Netherlands and Iceland continue to lead the OECD in broadband penetration.

RFID technology is increasingly used in a wide range of tracking and tracing applications. This study compares the implementation of RFID across a range of different sectors. Previous studies have either assessed related benefits and challenges on an aggregated level, or focused on one sector or specific application. This study is based on leading companies in Germany that are early adopters of RFID technology or undertaking pilot or implementation projects. It draws on in-depth interviews with early adopters from a broad range of industry sectors, academics and research institutes.

Jointly organised by UNCTAD, OECD and ILO, this meeting examined the impact of information and communication technologies (ICTs) on economic and social development and growth with a view to encouraging action at the national, regional and global levels to implement outcomes of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS). The sessions examined how ICTs can enable growth and development; the impact of ICTs on producitvity, growth and business sectors; and ICTs' impact on trade, labour markets and employment.
