Quality of life in Latin America: the urban dimension

Latin America is the only region in the developing world where the majority of the population lives in urban areas. OECD Development Centre Director, Javier Santiso, participated in this OECD/Inter-American Development Bank seminar analysing the results of a research project assessing efforts to improve the quality of life in Latin America's rapidly growing cities.

Theme of African Economic Outlook 2009 announced: Innovation in telecommunications

The African Development Bank, the OECD Development Centre and the UN Economic Commission for Africa have chosen 'Innovation in Telecommunications' as the thematic focus of the 2009 edition of the African Economic Outlook (AEO). Every year the AEO takes an in-depth look at an issue of critical importance for the continent's advancement. This year's theme completes the series on infrastructure sectors examined in previous editions: energy supply and poverty (2003)transport infrastructure (2005) and access to drinking water and sanitation (2007).

Spain strengthens support for Centre's Latin America and Africa work

The Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation will support the Development Centre’s Latin America and Africa desks with a grant worth €450,000.  The signature of the Memorandum of Understanding pledging this voluntary contribution took place on the occasion of the visit by the Spanish Ambassador to the OECD, Cristina Narbona, to the Centre.

Development Centre contributes to Accra High-Level Forum on Aid Effectiveness

A year of work on the “ownership” principle of effective aid has taught us: the best development policies have buy-in from citizens, parliaments and other groups, not just from central government. Moreover, they are not just home-owned, but home-grown. Our publications and events on "ownership" have been core ingredients of last weeks discussions on the issue at the Accra High-Level Forum on Aid Effectiveness (2-4 September).
