Publication of the OECD Survey on Countries’ Approaches to the Collection and Use of Agricultural Pesticide Sales and Usage Data: Survey Results

This report presents the results of an OECD survey that gathered information from twenty countries on how they collect and use sales and usage data concerning agricultural pesticides. The survey focused on the collection processes, the type of data that are collected and how these data are used and analysed.  This survey provides more current and comprehensive data than that collected in a previous OECD survey conducted in 1997 which focused exclusively on agricultural pesticide sales data (see ENV/JM/MONO(99)1 .)

Publication of the Report of the Seminar on Pesticide Risk Reduction through Spray Drift Reduction Strategies as Part of National Risk Management

This report presents the results of an OECD Seminar (June 2008) that looked at strategies to reduce pesticide spray drift and thus reduce risks posed by the application of pesticides on crops. Participants discussed various approaches for spray drift reduction (e.g. buffer zones, drift reduction technologies, labels), and developed several recommendations for promoting spray drift reduction technologies and policies.  Please also visit  www.oecd.org/env/spraydrift  (from 2010).

Publication of the Report of the Seminar on Pesticide Risk Reduction through Education / Training the Trainers

This report presents the outcomes of an OECD Seminar (November 2007, Mexico) that reviewed current approaches to achieving pesticide risk reduction through education and training for trainers. Participants discussed the various aspects of training programmes such as qualification, quality of training, communication and economic aspects. The Seminar recommended that countries develop training strategies and the OECD conduct a survey on education and training programmes.

Ireland should use the economic crisis to move to a clean, low-carbon society, says OECD Secretary-General Gurria

The current economic crisis offers an opportunity to transform Ireland’s growth model and make it stronger, cleaner and fairer. The OECD Secretary-General is presenting 38 recommendations to the Irish government to help move in that direction.

The OECD/Annex I Expert Group side event at the UN Climate Change Talks in Barcelona - "Financing for Enhanced Climate Change Action: Mitigation and Adaptation" at 15:30 on 3 November - will discuss the following critical issues with expert speakers and discussants from both Annex I and Non-Annex I countries: Overall financial architecture and MRV of financial support; Delivery of development finance to support climate change action; Matching support with actions and the role of registries.

Publication of the 2007 OECD List of High Production Volume Chemicals

The OECD List of High Production Volume (HPV) Chemicals serves as the overall priority list from which chemicals are selected for SIDS data gathering and testing and initial hazard assessment. It is compiled by the OECD Secretariat on the basis of regular submissions by Member countries reporting those industrial chemicals for which a Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) Registry Number had been assigned and which are produced or imported at levels greater than 1000 tonnes per year.

The 2009 Annual REPIN meeting: Focus on financial drivers of environmental compliance

Environmental liability regimes and approaches and criteria to assess administrative fines were in the focus of discussions at the annual meeting of the Regulatory Environmental Programme Implementation Network. This meeting took place on 11-12 June 2009 in Chisinau, Moldova. The Network was established back in 1999 and brings together environmental experts from Eastern Europe, Caucasus, and Central Asia (EECCA).

OECD Conference on Potential Environmental Benefits of Nanotechnology: Fostering Safe Innovation-Led Growth

The OECD Working Party on Manufactured Nanomaterials (WPMN) and the OECD Working Party on Nanotechnology (WPN) recently held a Conference on Potential Environmental Benefits of Nanotechnolgy: Fostering Safe Innovation-Led Growth on 15-17 July in 2009 at the OECD Conference Centre in Paris, France. The conference  covered both the opportunities and the challenges of the use of nanotechnologies for the potential benefits for the environment.

Managing Water for All publication launch

The OECD has released a new report – Managing Water for All: Pricing and Financing – at an event during the World Water Forum in Istanbul. Emphasising the economic, social and environmental benefits of investing in water and sanitation, the report includes information about the agricultural uses of water, financing water supply and sanitation, water pricing, private sector participation in the water sector and aid flows to water.

Annual Meeting of the EAP Task Force, 23-24 October 2008, Astana (Kazakhstan)

The next meeting of the EAP Task Force took place on 23-24 October 2008 in Astana, Kazakhstan.  The main purpose of the meeting was to discuss progress in implementing the the EAP Task Force's Programme of Work, and priority areas of work for 2009 and beyond. The meeting started with a special session on  how the challenge of institutional development of Environment Ministries in the region could be addressed, drawing on new approaches being employed by development cooperation agencies in OECD countries.

OECD Published Pov and LRTP Screening Tool

OECD published the "Pov and LRTP Screening Tool" which has been developed with the aim of using multimedia models for estimating overall persistence (Pov) and long-range transport potential (LRTP) of organic chemicals at a screening level in the context of PBTs/POPs assessments. The Tool calculates metrics of Pov and LRTP from a multimedia chemical fate model, and provides a graphical presentation of the results.
