OECD / IFP Meeting to explore the role of space technologies in food security, on November 6th 2009

The meeting will regroup experts from different organisations and industries to discuss trends and challenges in global food supplies, and examine the potential role of selected space applications. These space applications increasingly include remote sensing (e.g. imagery for agriculture monitoring) but also satellite communications and navigation (e.g. use of GPS supporting fisheries and sea transport). Publication: The Future of International Migration to OECD Countries

Factors shaping international migration flows are complex and hard to predict. This publication explores the social, economic and environmental forces that may attract migrants to the OECD and those that may persuade migrants to emigrate or to stay. By analysing pull and push factors and constructing migration scenarios, this volume endeavors to cast light on key questions.  Which factors will be major determinants of migration flows?  Which OECD countries will look attractive for migrants? What kind of migration-related issues will policy makers likely be facing as 2030 approaches?

Le rapport final "La Bioéconomie à l'horizon 2030" vient de paraître

Ce rapport examine les différents domaines influant sur le développement de la bioéconomie, tels que le progrès technologique, le financement de R&D, les ressources humaines, la propriété intellectuelle, la réglementation et les modèles économiques. L’ouvrage se penche ensuite sur les choix politiques qui permettraient de tirer parti des avantages sociaux, environnementaux et économiques d’une bioéconomie.

Governance of the Earth observation infrastructure: inputs from OECD / IFP (11 May 2009)

The OECD IFP was invited to present its findings on the space infrastructure, at the GMES Governance workshop organised by the EARSC and EUROSPACE associations, in cooperation with the European Commission's GMES Bureau and the European Economic and Social Committee in Brussels. Fourth Meeting of the OECD / IFP Space Forum's Steering Group

The Steering Group of the OECD / IFP Forum on Space Economics met in OECD, Paris on June 12th, 2009. Following recent work on the contributions of space technologies towards climate change management (OECD publication: “Space Technologies and Climate Change”), a new case study was launched to take stock of the role of space applications in global food supplies (e.g. crop monitoring from space). In addition, building on the Secretariat’s findings, a new and enriched version of the OECD publication “The Space Economy at a Glance” will be published in 2010.

The Bioeconomy to 2030 Final Report Now Available

The OECD IFP has released the final report of “The Bioeconomy to 2030” project. The report examines many areas influencing the development of the bioeconomy, including technological advance, R&D funding, human resources, intellectual property, regulation, and business models. Nouveau projet sur les besoins d'infrastructures transcontinentales à l'horizon 2030/2050

Après avoir mené à terme son projet sur les besoins d’infrastructures à l’horizon 2030 (2005-2007) portant sur les télécommunications, l’eau, l'électricité et les transports de surface, le Programme de l’OCDE sur l’avenir lance à présent une étude sur les ports, aéroports et autres grandes infrastructures intracontinentales et intercontinentales. La première réunion du Groupe de Pilotage aura lieu le 19 Novembre à Paris et sera suivie le 20 Novembre par un atelier centré sur le financement des infrastructures dans l'avenir. Presentation at conference organised by Eurisy and the Assembly of the European Regions (11 Sept. 2008)

The OECD IFP was invited to present recent work on indicators and governance issues during a workshop organised by Eurisy and the Assembly of the European Regions, in Brussels. The workshop entitled “Regional Policy: Benefits from Satellite Information and Services” gathered over 150 participants, half of them local and regional authorities, with the rest of the audience composed of European decision makers and service providers. Second meeting the IAF Technical Committee on the space economy (17 March 2009)

In early 2008, the International Astronautical Federation (IAF) asked the OECD/IFP to chair a new IAF Technical Committee, focusing on the economic aspects of space activities. After receiving positive feedbacks from its Space Forum members, the IFP accepted the invitation. The Committee assembles for the first time economists and other actors active in the economic analysis of the space sector (e.g. strategy departments) to allow international discussions on measurement issues (size of sector, impacts). The second meeting took place in Paris, in March 2009. Read the summary of discussions .

OECD/IFP at “The Space Economy Symposium” in Washington DC (13 March 2009)

The OECD IFP presented ongoing research and analysis via teleconference at “The Space Economy Symposium”, held in Washington DC. The event assembled some 100 participants from US industry and administrations. Hosted by the US Chamber of Commerce, the symposium was organised by the George Mason University in collaboration with Phillips & Company. Link to presentations: http://spaceeconomy.gmu.edu/.

"Space Technologies and Climate Change" presented at the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (10 Feb. 2009)

The OECD IFP was invited to present its work on the global Earth observation infrastructure (summarised in the publication “Space Technologies and Climate Change”) at the IAF Symposium on "The role of Earth observation satellites in promoting understanding and addressing climate change concerns". The event was held at the United Nations in Vienna, during the forty-sixth session of the Scientific and Technical Subcommittee of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space. The Future of International Migration: Second preparatory meeting of the organising group

The secretariat was pleased to welcome the organising group for a second preparatory meeting of The Future of International Migration on 7-8 July 2008. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the work carried out by the IFP secretariat to date, especially the commissioned papers and the indicators that were developed. Moreover, the participants were to agree on the shape and content of the December workshop and build four future scenarios for international migration in small break-out groups. The scenarios will be published in early 2009. The workshop will take place 1-2 December 2008.

Kick-off meeting of the Italian Civil Protection System's review

The International Futures Programme is conducting a review on  risk management policies. In this framework, a kick-off meeting was held in Rome on 6 May to present the review methodology to the Italian stakeholders, who shall be identified by the Italian Department of Civil Protection. The meeting was chaired by Dr. Guido Bertolaso, Head of the IDCP .
