Paris, 23 November 2009 - Young Poles have been hit hard by the jobs crisis. To help them, a new OECD report on Poland says that the government should invest more in vocational training schemes, and temporarily cut the cost of employing low-skilled school-leavers.

The Centre is pleased to announce that the African Economic Outlook, one of the OECD Development Centre’s flagship reports, won the Best in Class Interactive Media Award (IMA) for its website with an overall score of 500. This is the first perfect score in the history of IMA.

On 19-20 November the African Tax Administration Forum (ATAF) was launched by the President of Uganda. The ATAF mission is to mobilize domestic resources more effectively and increase the accountability of African States to African citizens whilst actively promoting an improvement in tax administration through sharing experiences, benchmarking and peer reviewing best practices.

In 2009, Colombia celebrates 50 years of competition law. The Peer Review of Competition Law and Policy in Colombia , jointly published by OECD and the IDB, assesses the development and application of Colombia’s law over the last few years and the expected outcomes of its reform earlier this year. The Journal of Pension Economics and Finance (JPEF), the only academic journal focusing on the economics and finance of pensions and retirement income programs, announces a new editorial structure and a broadening of its mission effective January 2010. Since 2002, the JPEF has provided an invaluable and influential forum for original research and international policy debate in the pensions area.

The growing importance of intellectual property in knowledge-based economies has generated concerns about potential adverse effects of counterfeiting and piracy. A recent OECD study attempted to quantify the magnitude of these effects, and based on that framework this short report updates the quantitative results using more recent international trade statistics for the calendar years 2000-2007. The updated estimates suggest that counterfeit and pirated goods in international trade grew steadily over this period and could amount to up to USD 250 billion in 2007.
