Competition law and policy in the Czech Republic have converged on European practices. Since the OECD review of Czech competition policy in 2001, the country has joined the European Union, while the Czech Competition Act has been revised and now closely follows the substantive terms and enforcement methods of the European Commission.

This document includes an executive summary and the documents from the meeting: written submissions from the Czech Republic, the European Commission, Finland, Ireland, Japan, Korea, the Netherlands, South Africa, Chinese Taipei, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the United States as well as an aide-memoire of the discussion.

Opening the 100th meeting of the competition committee, Mr. Gurría reminded that competition is vital for economic growth. It stimulates efficiency and higher productivity, it disciplines managers, it reinforces incentives for innovation, and it speeds up the adjustment to change. He also mentioned OECD countries that have implemented pro-competition reforms have seen higher growth rates and lower unemployment than those who failed to reform. They have also proved to be more flexible and resilient to economic shocks.

This roundtable addressed the potential objectives of remedies and sanctions, general suggestions for designing effective remedies, specific types of remedies and sanctions along with their strengths and weaknesses, and the remedies and sanctions applied in recent abuse of dominance cases.
