Architecture contributes to ideals in an Israeli school

The Democratic School in the city of Kfar-Saba demonstrates how an ideological approach towards education can be expressed through architecture. It is part of a movement of Democratic Schools in Israel and across the world where students participate in decisions about how their school is run.

Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso joins IMHE

We are pleased to announce that the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso has been accepted as a member of IMHE, becoming the first university from Chile to join the Programme. Chile is one of the accession candidate countries and participates in 17 committees and working groups within the OECD. Rector Alfonso Muga visited the OECD and IMHE last May, together with a high level Chilean delegation. The University expects to benefit from IMHE membership through enhanced collaboration with universities worldwide and access and exposure to international expertise.

School Buildings in Today's Crisis

To get a picture of the impact of the current economic and financial crisis on educational building programmes so far, the OECD Centre for Effective Learning Environments (CELE) has been conducting a survey of member countries and regions. The survey focuses on three main issues: the impact of the crisis on publicly funded projects, the impact on projects funded by private finance initiatives or through a public-private partnership, and the extent to which the crisis has affected the construction industry’s ability to build schools.

Spaces and places for vocational education and training

Those responsible for the planning of vocational education and training (VET) institutions face some specific challenges: for example, maintaining and improving specialised equipment, or integrating the latest technology. The Governing Board of the Programme on Educational Building (PEB) discussed some of the issues at a special session in November 2008.

Sustainable School Buildings: From Concept to Reality

In line with the OECD strategy for “green growth”, an international conference entitled “Sustainable School Buildings: From Concept to Reality”, co-organised by CELE and the Ministry of Education and Sport in Slovenia on 1-2 October 2009, brought together over 130 delegates from Slovenia and around the world.

OECD Thematic Review on Migrant Education - Second Meeting of National Experts, Paris

The Second Meeting of the Group of National Experts brought together 58 participants representing 22 countries as well as international organisations and independent researchers. The meeting was designed to share experience, discuss additional research findings, hear about the progress made by other international organisations in the area and discuss the policy evaluation framework to be used for country reviews.

It is particularly interesting for those involved in educational policy, as well as for professionals directly working in the education system of South Africa. OECD’s 2008 Education at a Glance to be published on Tuesday 9 September

OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurría will launch the 2008 edition of OECD’s annual Education at a Glance at a news conference at 11.00 a.m. on 9 September 2008 in Paris. This rich compendium of comparable statistics provides valuable underpinning for policy debate and decisions by education authorities.

Higher Education: Spaces and Places

What better place for 140 delegates to discuss how changing higher education needs will impact on facilities than the campus of the Helsinki University of Technology at Otaniemi in Espoo, Finland, designed by Alvar Aalto? What better place for 22 speakers to explore the future of universities than in Finland where hotly debated proposals for university reform could have a profound effect on facilities and buildings used by universities? PEB's "Higher Education: Spaces and Places" conference took place on 21-23 May 2008; a full report will soon be available.

Conference on Environments for Learners with Special Needs

PEB, in co-operation with the New Zealand Ministry of Education, held an international conference entitled “Inclusion and Integration through Innovation: The Role of 21st Century Learning Environments in Promoting Social Participation and Access to Education for Learners with Special Needs” in Auckland, New Zealand. OECD Thematic Review on Migrant Education- First Meeting of Group of National Experts

The launch of the OECD Thematic Review on Migrant Education took place from 21-22 January 2008 in OECD Headquarters, Paris. The meeting was opened by Deputy Secretary-General Aart de Geus (read his speech) and Director of the OECD Directorate for Education, Dr. Barbara Ischinger.
