This newsletter is published three times a year by IMHE, the unique OECD international forum designed for higher education institutions.
This issue presents the initial findings on the project entitled “ Supporting the Contribution of Higher Education Institutions to Regional Development” which looks for innovative solutions on how to manage the regional interface.

This conference hosted by the Institutional Management in Higher Education (IMHE) programme of the OECD in conjunction with Universitas 21 will bring together university leaders and researchers from around the world to discuss ways to create and maintain workplaces where staff can thrive and succeed. This is an opportunity for institutions that have made progress in attracting, retaining or developing staff or to attending to employee wellbeing to showcase their efforts and offer promising solutions and next-steps to conference attendees.

Portugal will need to invest more over the long term in its universities and other post-secondary schooling institutions if it wants to raise attainment levels to standards similar to those of other European countries, according to an OECD review of Portugal’s tertiary education system to be published next year.

Increasing pressure for comparison and ranking of institutions, nationally and internationally, is having an impact on institutional strategy and priorities. These developments raise questions about how rankings are affecting institutions, how they should be compared and grouped, and whether they are in the public interest. Within the OECD Directorate for Education, the IMHE Programme focuses on institutional leadership management and governance in higher education.
