The Spanish version of the OECD World Bank Bío Bío review report has just been published. The Bío Bío Region has a high concentration of higher education and research activity. Its universities and higher education institutions have made significant progress in widening access to education. But the Bío Bío Region continues to suffer from brain drain as well as higher than average unemployment and poverty rates. This joint OECD and World Bank review explores a range of helpful policy measures and institutional reforms to mobilise higher education for the development of the Bío Bío Region.

Avec une population de presque 7 millions d’habitants, Veracruz est le troisième état le plus peuplé du Mexique. Veracruz dispose d'une économie traditionnelle, basée sur les ressources, avec une population peu qualifiée, et un taux élevé de pauvreté. Ce rapport met en avant comment Veracruz s’est transformé, d’une région sous performante, en retard à un centre de connaissance et d’innovation.

La Catalogne est le principal contributeur économique de l’Espagne. Pendant longtemps, elle a amené des investissements stratégiques dans la recherche et le développement en Espagne et développé des programmes remarquables pour attirer des talents. La région a également une identité propre avec son propre langage et son héritage culturel unique. La Catalogne ressent à présent les effets de la crise économique. Ce rapport souligne comment la Catalogne peut se préparer à l’après crise économique avec l’aide du système universitaire.

In 2006, IMHE and the International Association of Universities (IAU) sponsored a study examining how HEIs are responding to higher education rankings and their impact or influence on key stakeholders. Phase 2 was launched in 2008 with focus on institutional and stakeholder views of the impact of rankings.
Interest in rankings has continued unabated and Ellen Hazelkorn has now written Rankings and the Reshaping of Higher Education: The Battle for World-Class Excellence, the first comprehensive study of rankings from a global perspective.

International conference on Higher Education at a Time of Crisis: Challenges and Opportunities, 29-30 June

OECD’s Programme on Institutional Management in Higher Education announces plans for a conference on the impact of the economic crisis on higher education institutions on 29-30 June hosted by the Copenhagen Business School in co-operation with OECD/IMHE.
The conference will debate questions of supply and demand, costs and income in higher education and will analyse the role and responsibility of higher education institutions and how to transform these challenges into opportunities.

Informal Meeting of OECD Education Ministers on Evaluating the Outcomes of Higher Education

An informal meeting of OECD Education Ministers hosted by the Ministry of Education Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) will be held in Tokyo, Japan, on the 11-12 January 2008. Ministers will discuss: society’s expectations on the outcomes of higher education; how to apply evaluation to policy and practice and assess higher education learning outcomes; and share national experiences with evaluating the quality of higher education outcomes.

La réunion de 2006 aura lieu les 12 et 13 octobre à Tomsk et traitera tout particulièrement des échanges de pratiques couronnées de succès entre les universités russes et les universités des pays membres de l’OCDE.

The OECD has been engaged, since 2002, in a series of activities to promote research in Russian universities and to improve the management of intellectual property in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Science. The 2006 meeting will take place on 12-13 October in Tomsk and will specifically address exchanges of successful practices between Russian universities and OECD member country universities.

The first Forum on the theme of The Challenges for Education in a Global Economy, co-hosted with the Chilean Ministry of Education, was held in Santiago on 24-25 October 2005. This event drew on the networks of education officials and experts established since 1991 through the Directorate for Education’s Programme for Co-operation with non OECD Economies.
