The report provides an update of some of the developments in environmental expenditure and finance in the Russian Federation. It presents the latest available data on trends in environmental expenditure and reviews a series of instruments to finance environmental policies in Russia, namely, revenues from economic instruments, user charges for water supply and sanitation, environmental funds, intergovernmental transfers, local capital markets and environmental assistance.

Cities should tackle climate change to stay competitive - Milan, 9-10 October

Cities are a major source of air pollution and must lead efforts to combat climate change. Mayors and ministers will meet in Milan to discuss ways to promote environmentally sound transport, energy, waste and water services, while retaining economic competitiveness.

According to A. Gurría, climate change is a global challenge demanding a global solution. The will to implement the policies that will bring us to a low-carbon future is gaining momentum. Now is the time to reach a climate agreement. Doing so will require the commitment of all stakeholders.

Speaking to the Energy Leaders Summit in London today, OECD Secretary-General A. Gurría warned that the cost of ambitious emissions reductions will be higher than previously estimated. He noted, however, that it is still more affordable than the costs and consequences of inaction. He stressed that we need to use the right mix of policies, including putting a price on greenhouse gas emissions and developing new low-carbon technologies.

The International Workshop on Documentary Standards for Measurement and Characterisation in Nanotechnologies was held 26-28 February 2008 at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, Gaithersburg (USA), in co-ordination with ISO, IEC, NIST and the OECD. The participants discussed the development, efficacy, harmonisation and uptake of documentary standards broadly relevant to the field of measurement and characterisation for nanotechnologies.
