Based on a new dataset, the paper summarises recent evidence on the generation and international diffusion of selected climate change mitigation technologies (CCMTs) and their respective links to key policies. The data covers a selection of technology fields (renewable energy sources and ‘clean’ coal) and all countries over the last 30-35 years.

The Volumes 3 and 4 on "Safety Assessment of Transgenic Organisms: OECD Consensus Documents" are now available. They compile documents issued between 2006 and 2010. These books should be of value to applicants for commercial uses of transgenic organisms (crops, trees, microorganisms), to regulators and risk assessors in national authorities, as well as the wider scientific community.

(Quantitative) Structure-Activity Relationships or (Q)SARs are methods for estimating properties of a chemical from its molecular structure. The QSAR Toolbox is a software intended to be used by governments, the chemical industry and other stakeholders to apply (Q)SARs to fill data gaps needed for assessing the hazards of chemicals. The new version contains many improved tools and databases, especially for the prediction of hazards to human health, and has a more user-friendly interface. The release is part of a collaboration between OECD and the European Chemicals Agency.

A one-day workshop, aimed at sharing knowledge on Low-Carbon Growth (LCG) amongst countries in the Asia-Pacific region and international donors, was held in Bangkok. It stressed the need for each countries to identify policy measures and pursue their activities to attain low-carbon growth, and for international co-operation to be conducted at the regional scale.

"Incorporating Climate Change Impacts and Adaptation in Environmental Impact Assessments: Opportunities and Challenges” shows that there is ample scope for employing EIA procedures as a vehicle for enhancing the resilience of projects to the impacts of climate change. While a number of governments have signalled their intent to move in this direction, this assessment could find examples in only three countries of projects that considered climate change impacts and adaptation as part of the EIA.

“Plan or React? Analysis of Adaptation Costs and Benefits Using Integrated Assessment Models” presents the first inter-model comparison of results on adaptation costs. Results show that all types of adaptation options are important in offsetting some of the adverse impacts of climate change. However, the total costs of climate change are the lowest when both mitigation and adaptation are undertaken in conjunction.
