Society at a Glance - Asia/Pacific Edition 2009 shows that in terms of income inequality in Asia, China stands out with the poorest 10% sharing only 1.6% of national income, while the top 10% on the income scale own almost 35% of the country’s wealth. This special edition of Society at a Glance looks at social trends and policy developments in Asia-Pacific countries.

Before the crisis, immigrants were doing rather well on the labour market in Norway compared with other OECD countries. However, immigrants are now disproportionately affected by the ongoing economic downturn.This is especially the case for the many recent arrivals from the new EU member states. There is a risk that this can have a lasting effect on their future labour market outcomes. The current downturn is thus a “testing time” for the integration of immigrants in Norway, the report says.

The economic crisis is likely to cause the first major fall in the number of migrants coming to work in OECD countries since the 1980s, according to a new OECD report. This is already happening, for example, in Ireland, Spain and the UK, which were among the countries first hit by the downturn.

Since 30 June 2009, the Family database (www.oecd.org/els/social/family/database) includes 52 indicators with cross-national information on family outcomes and policies as categorised under 4 broad headings: the structure of families, families and children, the labour market position of families, public policies for families and children, and child outcomes. A Child Well-being Expert Consultation took place at OECD in Paris at the end of May 2009. The purpose of the child well-being consultation was to develop a shared understanding of a set of data that countries should monitor in order to inform policies for children’s well-being - see www.oecd.org/els/social/childwellbeing. Also on Tuesday 1st September 2009, the OECD will release a new publication on child well-being indicators. Increasing social inclusion requires a joined-up approach that cuts across policy departments. The public sector should re-think the way it operates, moving from a traditional hierarchical model to one characterised by multi-sectoral partnerships and flexibility in policy delivery. These topics will be discussed at this conference co-organised by the Centre for Public Policy at the University of Melbourne, the Victorian Department of Planning and Community Development and the OECD LEED Programme.

Conference on "Decentralisation and Co-ordination: The Twin Challenges of Labour Market Policy", Venice, Italy

This high-level conference was organised by the Senate and the Ministry of Labour and Social Security of Italy and the OECD LEED Programme, in collaboration with Italia Lavoro and Isfol. It took stock of 10 years of decentralisation since the initial Venice conference which the LEED Programme organised in 1998 at the request of the Italian government.

This international conference was organised by the OECD LEED Programme, in partnership with the French Inter-ministerial Delegation for Innovation, Social Experimentation and Social Economy, the National Co-operation Group and in co-operation with the Eurogroup Institute. The event was a unique occasion to discuss co-operative banks' recent developments and to analyse the challenges with which the sector is confronted.
