Iceland: Challenging times for monetary and fiscal policies

Monetary and fiscal policies face huge challenges: the banking sector has collapsed; the economy is in the midst of a deep recession; the exchange rate has plunged; capital flows have been frozen; inflation is elevated; public debt has risen; source of revenues have disappeared; social needs have increased; and the unemployment insurance fund has been nearly depleted.

6th annual meeting of OECD LEED Forum on partnerships and local governance

G20: International standards on structural policies key to emerging from crisis

Framework for Information Exchange in Local Development (FIELD)

Making the most of income-support policies in a downturn

The current downturn is severely testing the adequacy of unemployment benefit systems as the primary safety net for job-losers and their families. This section of chapter 1 of OECD Employment Outlook 2009 considers the scope and generosity of existing income-support policies and asks whether, and how, support measures should be adapted to deal with the challenges occasioned by a severe recession.

Capacity building seminar on "Getting theyYoung into jobs: the role of partnerships" , Trento, Italy

Ensuring a smooth and quick transition from education to employment and fighting education drop-out trends are key objectives of youth policies across OECD countries. The seminar was addressed to those already working in partnerships on youth policies, or in the process of establishing a partnership in one of the following areas: (i) promoting entrepreneurship; (ii) youth skills initiatives; and (iii) integrating youth with accumulated disadvantages.

High-Level Policy Forum on Migration

During the first-ever OECD High-Level Policy Forum on Migration (Paris, 29-30 June 2009), ministers and senior officials in charge of migration and integration issues discussed the impact of the current economic crisis on international migration, management of labour migration movements and labour market integration of immigrants and their children.

Capacity building seminar for local development practitioners on “Routes out of the crisis – New strategies for skills and employment”, Trento, Italy

Agora Talentia, Pamplona, Spain

Experts meeting - Employment and Skills Strategies in South-East Asia (ESSSA): Indonesia and the Philippines

The ILO and the OECD jointly organised an experts meeting on fostering employment and skills development strategies in Indonesia and the Philippines, as part of OECD LEED’s initiative on Employment and Skills Development in South East Asia (ESSSA), in Jakarta on 3 December 2008. The meeting addressed issues of decentralisation, partnerships, skills upgrading and integration of the disadvantaged in the labour market and learn the lessons from the OECD experience in these areas.

Inter-Agency Conference on Local Economic Development (LED), Turin, Italy
