School Buildings in Today's Crisis

To get a picture of the impact of the current economic and financial crisis on educational building programmes so far, the OECD Centre for Effective Learning Environments (CELE) has been conducting a survey of member countries and regions. The survey focuses on three main issues: the impact of the crisis on publicly funded projects, the impact on projects funded by private finance initiatives or through a public-private partnership, and the extent to which the crisis has affected the construction industry’s ability to build schools.

Three out of four teachers feel they lack incentives to improve the quality of their teaching, while bad behaviour by students in the classroom disrupts lessons in three schools out of five, according to a new OECD report “Creating effective teaching and learning environments”.

The second round of the OECD reviews of Higher education in regional and city development has a strong focus in Latin America and Spain, where altogether seven regions will undergo a review process under the OECD lead in 2009-2010. To better serve the regions and their higher education institutions in the Spanish language area, a Spanish version of the Higher education in regional and city development brochure has now been published.
