The Czech education system: coping with demand shifts

As in many OECD countries, the Czech Republic is experiencing falling student numbers in primary and secondary schools but rising demand for degree-level courses. The OECD Economic Survey of the Czech Republic highlights the problems of coping with school closures on the one hand and, on the other, of ensuring the tertiary sector copes with expansion.

Review of Education in the Dominican Republic

In December 2005, site visits were carried out for a review on education in the Dominican Republic. This review was requested and financed by the Dominican authorities. The international team who conducted the site visits included experts from the USA, Ireland, France, Chile and Brazil.

A meeting to discuss the review will take place toward the end of 2006 and a publication will follow.

Peer Review of Education in Mauritius

In 2005, the ADEA and the Ministry of Education of Mauritius signed a Framework for Co-operation for a peer review exercise in Mauritius. It aims to develop recommendations for the further improvement of education provision in terms of Mauritian national goals. The recommendations are from the Dakar Framework of Education for All and the Millennium Development Goals.

A site visit of international experts from Benin, Kenya, Nigeria, OECD and UNESCO was carried out in November 2005.

Micro-projects on Statistics and Data Gathering (SENDDD)

As part of the OECD project on "Education development for Disabled and at Risk Students in South Eastern Europe", education ministries have been invited to participate in activities to address capacity building in the field of statistics and data gathering. Country-specific micro-projects will be implemented in 2006/2007.
