Supporting Japan’s Policy Objectives: OECD’s Contribution

Reforms in in nine key areas - a strategy for domestic demand-led growth, the labour market, environment and climate change, education, taxes, health and long-term care, pension reform, regional policy and decentralization and public governance, could bring about a lasting improvement in Japan’s economic prospects, according to OECD analysis (also available in Japanese).

In an op-ed published in the Greek newspaper Kathimerini in October 2009, A. Dean, Director of country studies at the OECD, says it is urgent for the government to improve the financial situation and the efficiency of its public sector. It is the only way to restore trust in public finances, maintain a high economic growth and improve fairness among generations.

Pier Carlo Padoan appointed OECD Chief Economist

OECD and EIB sign agreement to work together on global challenges

The OECD and the European Investment Bank have agreed to share their expertise in support of economic co-operation and sustainable development.  OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurría and EIB President Philippe Maystadt signed a co-operation agreement to that effect today in Paris.

Recovery still too timid to halt rising unemployment, says OECD Economic Outlook

The economic recovery now spreading across OECD countries is still too timid to halt the continuing rise in unemployment, according to the OECD’s latest Economic Outlook. The jobless rate is expected to peak in the first half of 2010 in the US, but it may not be until 2011 that unemployment begins to fall in the Euro area.

Gurría calls for ‘new generation’ of statistics to reinforce public confidence in government

G20: International standards on structural policies key to emerging from crisis

Welcoming the adoption of the Framework for Strong, Sustainable and Balanced Growth by G20 leaders gathered in Pittsburgh for the G20 summit, OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurría said new sources of jobs and growth needed for the global economy to effect a sustained recovery, will only emerge if the right structural policies are adopted by the world’s leading global economies.

OECD welcomes experts’ call on need for new measures of social progress

In remarks prepared for a workshop on the findings of the Commission on the Measurement of Economic Performance and Social Progress set up by French President Nicolas Sarkozy, Mr Gurría noted that the OECD is well placed to lead international cooperation on harmonising concepts and methodologies. The OECD World Forum on 27-30 October 2009 will provide the next major international opportunity to advance the Commission’s recommendations.
