The UN Secretary General’s Special Representative on business and human rights has just published a survey of the human rights practices of the Fortune Global 500 companies. The survey results include information on the Global 500 companies’ references to external instruments, including to the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises.

Held in Paris on 19 June 2006, the Roundtable explored the theme of “Developing a proactive approach to the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises”. Discussion focused on partnerships for promoting the Guidelines and encouraging the adoption of responsible business practices, as well as using dialogue under the Guidelines to create “win-win” situations for companies and host societies.

A new policy brief report issued by the Task Force of the Asian Roundtable on Corporate Governance sets out consensus objectives and recommendations for banks, regulators and policy-makers to strengthen corporate governance of banks in the region.

In October 2005, the OECD launched an invitation for public comment on its draft Risk Management Tool for Investors in Weak Governance Zones. A strong response was received from global and regional organisations, business, labour and other civil society representatives. These comments can be consulted online and will be used to improve the draft risk management tool which is scheduled for finalisation by Spring 2006.

After their endorsement in April 2005, the OECD has now published Guidelines on Corporate Governance of State-owned enterprises. These new Guidelines provide the first international benchmark to help governments assess the way they exercise their ownership responsibilities vis-à-vis state-owned enterprises (SOEs). They are non binding and complementary to the OECD Principles of Corporate Governance

The Sixth Meeting of the Latin American Corporate Governance Roundtable took place in Lima, Peru, on 20 - 21 September, 2005. The Roundtable reviewed progress in implementing the recommendations of the Latin American White Paper on Corporate Governance, considered emerging practices in strengthening enforcement, and experience in improving board effectiveness. Participants also exchanged experience regarding the relevance of the new OECD Guidelines on Corporate Governance of State-Owned Enterprises in the Latin American context.

The OECD has “kicked-off” its work on corporate governance of non-listed companies convening policy-makers and business-people from 36 countries around the globe. Participants exchanged concrete experiences with different corporate governance approaches and discussed what policy-makers can do to facilitate and enable non-listed companies to improve corporate governance on a voluntary basis.
