Government leaders, policy makers and practitioners discussed the impact of regional policy, present and future perspectives, at an international conference on “Regional Policy around the World”, held in Porto, Portugal, 29 September 2008. This conference was organised by the Portuguese Ministry of Environment, Spatial Planning and Regional Development, in co-operation with the OECD. On this occasion the report “OECD Territorial Review of Portugal” was officially launched.

This high-level event, was jointly organised by the OECD, the Milan City Council and the Province of Milan. It brought together ministers, mayors, eminent personalities from the Club of Madrid (former Heads of States and Governments), prominent experts, and representatives of international organisations and government networks, to examine one of the key global challenges facing cities today - climate change. The conference looked at the relationships between urbanisation and climate change, and the implications of urban policy making in relation to competitiveness objectives.

The international conference on "What Policies for Globalising Cities? Rethinking the Urban Policy Agenda", co-organised by the OECD and the Spanish authorities, will be held 29-30 March 2007 at the Municipal Congress Hall, in Campo de las Naciones, Madrid. It will bring together government leaders, policy makers and practitioners to examine urban policy in the context of globalisation and the growing challenges for cities.
