The financial crisis has led to a strong demand for new regulation and for this to be implemented rapidly. To avoid excessive regulation, a new publication calls for increased use of Regulatory Impact Assessment in the area of corporate governance and gives a number of examples of how the technique has been applied to promote more efficient policy. Examples include both ex-ante and ex-post analysis, the approach to defining policy needs and the role of quantification.

The Peer Review of Competition Law and Policy in Colombia , jointly published by OECD and the IDB, assesses the development and application of Colombia’s law over the last few years and the expected outcomes of its reform earlier this year. The Sixth Meeting of the Latin American Corporate Governance Roundtable took place in Lima, Peru, on 20 - 21 September, 2005. The Roundtable reviewed progress in implementing the recommendations of the Latin American White Paper on Corporate Governance, considered emerging practices in strengthening enforcement, and experience in improving board effectiveness. Participants also exchanged experience regarding the relevance of the new OECD Guidelines on Corporate Governance of State-Owned Enterprises in the Latin American context.

The Latin American Roundtable on Corporate Governance launched, on May 10th in Sao Paulo, Brazil, a new Companies Circle. This is an initiative led by companies who have adopted best practices of corporate governance. Its objectives are to bring together a group of Latin American companies who have adopted best corporate governance practices to provide private sector input into the work of the Roundtable; and to share with each other and the public their experiences putting the principles of good corporate governance into practice.

The OECD presented the draft of a new report on corporate governance in the region which provides a comprehensive overview of the legal framework, actual practice and reform priorities. The meeting discussed the 2004 OECD Principles of Corporate Governance and corporate governance reform in Ukraine.
