Cooking, Caring and Volunteering: Unpaid Work Around the World

This paper sheds light on the importance of unpaid work across the OECD. The calculations suggest that between one-third and half of all valuable economic activity is not accounted for in the traditional measures of well-being, such as GDP per capita. In all countries, women do more unpaid work than men, although to some degree balanced by the fact that they do less market work.

Workshop on Immigrant Integration in Ghana

The OECD Development Centre and ISSER co-organised a workshop in Accra,on 8 December 2010 to discuss immigrant integration in West Africa, with a specific focus on Ghana. This workshop brought together researchers and policy makers to share experiences and perspectives, in order to develop effective policies aimed at a better integration of immigrants.

Aid in Support of Women's Economic Empowerment

Aid committed by DAC members to gender equality and women’s empowerment in the economic and productive sectors amounted to USD 4.6 billion on average per year in 2007‐08. This brief analyses how this aid was allocated.

Japan should enrol non-regulars in social insurances, ease access to welfare, extend activation measures, says OECD

Japan has high employment rates for men and older workers and relatively low unemployment. Benefit entitlements for the unemployed are limited, but other labour market policies, including efficient placement services, help to prevent unemployment and tackle labour market and social problems arising from it. Japan should push the implementation of several current reforms, which include expanding social insurance coverage among non-regular workers, easing access to social welfare and encouraging firms to bridge the gap between their age of retirement and the earliest access to a public pension.

Jobs for Youth  says that young people are more than twice as likely to be unemployed as the average worker. Yet few governments are taking proactive steps to boost youth employment.

European Governance of Migration

Migration and Development: EADI Conference 2008

"Migration and Development: Policy Coherence and Effective Partnerships", organised at the 12th General Conference of EADI, took stock of what we know about the effects of migration on development. Participants shared their specific country or regional experiences to illustrate the mechanisms that link migration and development, in particular related to labour-market effects, the brain drain, remittances, diaspora networks and return migration.

Seminar on the Life Risks, Life Course and Social Policy

Identify how social and economic goals can best be achieved, for example by policy interventions at certain critical "transition points" or by redistribution of income from one point in the life course to another. How assess the best way of financing social policies across the life course. These issues were discussed by a range of experts and policy makers at a seminar held on Thursday 31 May - Friday 1st June 2007 in Paris.
