Health spending continues rising faster than economic growth in most OECD countries, maintaining a trend observed since the 1970s. Health spending reached 9.5% of GDP on average in 2009, the most recent year for which figures are available, up from 8.8% in 2008, according to OECD Health Data 2011.

Prior to the social ministerial meeting, a Policy Forum on Tackling Inequality was held on the morning of 2 May 2011 to discuss the trend of high and increasing income inequality in many OECD countries and emerging economies and the way forward to a better sharing of the benefits of globalisation.

Health Ministers will meet at the OECD on 7-8 October 2010 to discuss health priorities following the economic crisis. They will discuss how to provide better health at a lower cost and how spending money on preventing unhealthy lifestyles can be a better use of health funds than dealing with the resulting diseases.
Prior to the Ministerial a Forum on quality of care will be held and will examine how quality affects the efficiency of health systems.

The Ministerial meeting will be preceded by a Policy Forum on the morning of 28 September. The Forum will provide an opportunity for Ministers to share their views on these important issues with the social partners, researchers, representatives of civil society and journalists.

The OECD Development Centre has recently organised a joint seminar with the Directorate for Employment, Labour and Social Affairs (ELS) focusing on the evolution of the quantity and quality of employment and its impact on poverty and inequality, with a specific focus on Brazil, China and India.
