OECD Expert Workshop on Knowledge Markets in Life Sciences

The Biotechnology Division of the OECD organized an experts workshop on “Knowledge Markets in the Life Sciences” in Washington, DC on October 16-17, 2008.  Its purpose was to explore whether Knowledge Markets could be more broadly used and to identify what governments may need to do to help make such new markets become a reality. This workshop is the first policy meeting to consider what new exchange mechanisms improve access to and use of the vast amounts of data, knowledge and information created in the biomedical sciences. 

OECD Expert Workshop on Biomarkers and Targetted Therapies

At a workshop organized by the OECD Biotechnology Division in October in the United Kingdom, experts discussed how to improve the development and use of biomarkers in health care.  Topics included:  data and knowledge sharing for biomarker research; the creation of an evidence base and the clinical evaluation of biomarkers; the regulatory and policy framework  for safe and efficient development of biomarkers; and business models for biomarker discovery, development and commercialization.

The International Workshop on Documentary Standards for Measurement and Characterisation in Nanotechnologies was held 26-28 February 2008 at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, Gaithersburg (USA), in co-ordination with ISO, IEC, NIST and the OECD. The participants discussed the development, efficacy, harmonisation and uptake of documentary standards broadly relevant to the field of measurement and characterisation for nanotechnologies. Report on Mathematics in Industry

The Workshop on Mathematics in Industry, held in March 2007, brought together mathematicians, industry representatives, and officials of science funding agencies to examine the relationship between the mathematical sciences and industry.This report contains analyses and findings about the potential of applying advanced mathematics to modern industrial problems. Mechanisms of proven efficacy are described, for implementation by universities, institutes, companies and government agencies. An addendum to this report provides additional practical information about these mechanisms.

Global Forum on Space Economics

The Forum, which operates within the OECD International Futures Programme, focused on the economic and social dimensions of space applications and exploration, thereby filling an important gap in the current international institutional framework for space-related activities. Conference "Intellectual Assets and Innovation: Value Creation in the Knowledge Economy", Ferrara (Italy)

This conference addressed four questions: What intellectual assets create value in the knowledge economy? How can we do a better job of measuring and identifying the impact of intellectual assets, such as R&D, patents, brands, software and human capital? Should we improve reporting on intellectual assets and their added value?  What policies can foster the development of intellectual assets and facilitate their exploitation?

Linking Evidence to Practice - International Conference

On 14 and 15 September 2005, the third OECD-conference on Evidence Based Policy Research took place in The Hague, Netherlands. The conference explored how bridges can be built between researchers, policy makers and educational practitioners by using evidence based research to improve policy making.  Focus was on the role of brokerage agencies (i.e., institutions, programmes, or other mechanisms) designed to improve linkages between research and policy concerns and act as bridges in a national or international context (for example, the EPPI-Centre in the UK).

Space technology has huge potential to provide practical responses to society’s major challenges. Over the coming decades, governments will increasingly be confronted with long-term problems such as threats to the environment or the management of decreasing natural resources.

Conference on E-learning in Post-secondary Education: Policies, Practices and Research

The OECD/Canada/Alberta Conference on E-Learning in Post-Secondary Education: Policies, Practices, and Research  was held in Calgary, Canada, 26-28 June, 2005.  The conference, jointly organised by the OECD's Centre for Educational Research and Innovation (CERI)  , Industry Canada, Human Resources and Skills Development Canada, and Alberta Advanced Education , was intended to: discuss key policy issues in e-learning in post-secondary education; provide a forum for sharing good practices and challenges, and identify opportunities for research and collaboration.
