IOMC/OECD/UNITAR Awareness-Raising Workshop for Developing and Transition Countries on Nanotechnology/Manufactured Nanomaterials

OECD and UNITAR will hold Awareness-Raising Workshops for Developing and Transition Countries on Nanotechnology/Manufactured Nanomaterials. These workshops will be held under the auspices of the IOMC following a request for action regarding nanotechnologies and nanomaterials. These workshops will inform on potential applications and risks from nanotechnologies and manufactured nanomaterials and look for opportunities for awareness raising activities to be undertaken in those countries. The workshops will be held in conjunction with SAICM during the UN regional meetings during 2009-2010.

OECD Guidelines on Human Biobanks and Genetic Research Databases (HBGRD)

The recently adopted OECD Recommendation provides guidance on the establishment, management, governance, operation, access, use and discontinuation of HBGRDs. It has been developed to aid policymakers and practitioners who are establishing new HBGRDs, although many of the principles and best practices can also be usefully applied to HBGRDs already in existence.

OECD / IFP Meeting to explore the role of space technologies in food security, on November 6th 2009

The meeting will regroup experts from different organisations and industries to discuss trends and challenges in global food supplies, and examine the potential role of selected space applications. These space applications increasingly include remote sensing (e.g. imagery for agriculture monitoring) but also satellite communications and navigation (e.g. use of GPS supporting fisheries and sea transport). Report on Applications of Complexity Science for Public Policy: New Tools for Finding Unanticipated Consequencesand Unrealized Opportunities

Policymakers increasingly encounter problems that involve systems composed of very large numbers of diverse interacting parts, prone to surprising, large-scale, seemingly uncontrollable, behaviours. These are what scientists call complex systems. An exciting new field, complexity science has emerged, devoted to understanding, predicting, and influencing the behaviours of complex systems. This report explores the proposition that the insights achieved through scientific analysis can be used to design and implement better governmental policies, programmes, regulations, and infrastructures.

OECD Workshop Risk Assessment of Manufactured Nanomaterials in a Regulatory Context

This workshop was held on 16-18 September 2009 in Washington D.C., United States. This Workshop was co-hosted with the Business and Industry Advisory Committee to OECD (BIAC) and the Society for Risk Analysis (SRA). The  objectives were: i) to collect expert input to the critical issues specific for the risk assessments of nanomaterials; ii) to identify possible approaches for risk assessment based on the current state of knowledge; and iii) to identify issues which may be addressed through OECD’s testing programme. The workshop report will be available towards the end of the year.

OECD Working Party on Manufactured Nanomaterials: 6th meeting

The 6th Meeting of the WPMN was held on 28-30 October 2009. During this meeting, the WPMN discussed the targets that need to be set in order to implement the Programme of Work 2009-2012. Accordingly, the WPMN agreed the updated Operational Plans for 2009-2012 for each of its projects and a new project on Co-operation on the Environmental Sustainability Use of Nanotechnology. Finally, the WPMN discussed how to continue progress on the Sponsorship Programme for the Testing of Manufactured Nanomaterials .

This workshop, organised jointly by the World Bank/infoDev and the OECD, aimed to share best practices in coherent approaches to meeting development objectives laid out by Ministers.
