In Latin America, persistence in educational achievements across generations is high compared to other parts of the world. That is, not only is the income distribution in Latin America highly unequal, but profound differences in opportunities persist from one generation to the next. The paper discusses factors behind this performance, and tools for boosting upward mobility in the region.

Mario Pezzini, director of the development centre of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), visited SA this week for an African seminar series hosted by Frontier Advisory and the JSE and stated that inequality and a lack of social cohesion will have an increasingly important impact on economic and political matters.

South-South trade is growing fast, but barriers among developing countries are still up to seven times higher than those imposed by the developed world, a representative from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) said on Wednesday.
Speaking at a Frontier Advisory seminar at the JSE, OECD Development Centre director Mario Pezzini said that South-South trade had experienced tremendous growth in recent years, with exports from developing countries now constituting 37% of global trade, of which about 50% related to South-South trade.

Social protection coverage is quite low in Latin America. This situation, irrespective of the type of pension scheme, represents a challenge for public policy since these low levels of affiliation and irregular contribution histories indicate that pensions will be insufficient in the coming decades. This paper describes the relationship between pension protection and labour informality in Bolivia, Brazil, Chile and Mexico by income level, using several rounds of national household surveys.

The OECD Development Centre and ISSER co-organised a workshop in Accra,on 8 December 2010 to discuss immigrant integration in West Africa, with a specific focus on Ghana. This workshop brought together researchers and policy makers to share experiences and perspectives, in order to develop effective policies aimed at a better integration of immigrants.

The uneven global recovery is challenging Latin America and the Caribbean, but the region will emerge stronger from the crisis with high growth potential if it continues deepening integration into the global economy. This was one of the main conclusions reached by leaders and experts participating in the III International Economic Forum Latin America & the Caribbean 2011, organized for the third consecutive year by the OECD Development Centre, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and France’s Ministry of Economy, Finance and Industry.

This paper by Development Centre economists Rolando Avendaño and Sebastián Nieto-Parra have studies the impact of workers’ remittances on sovereign ratings in 55 developing countries over the period 1993–2006. The paper has been included in the first issue of new journal Review of Development Finance. Results suggest that there is no single model to rate countries and the impact of remittances on ratings is enhanced for small, low and middle income economies.

The International Conference on Social Cohesion and Development held on 20-21 January 2011 deepened understanding of the relationship between social cohesion and development. Plenary and parallel sessions offered ample opportunities to discuss various topics related to the conference theme such as employment, gender and migration. The programme included, among others, Richard Freeman (Harvard University), Rebeca Grynspan (UNDP), Michael Woolcock (World Bank) and Cassam Uteem (ex President of Mauritius).

Participants in this Global Forum Workshop discussed their experiences with innovative financing mechanisms for development. Focusing on the health sector, and drawing more particularly on a case study on the International Finance Facility for Immunisation, the aim meeting allowed for a useful lessons sharing exercise aiming at the improvement and future design of financing mechanisms. Presentations and background documents are now online.

Latin America is the only region in the developing world where the majority of the population lives in urban areas. The OECD and the Inter-American Development Bank presented the results of a research project assessing efforts to improve the quality of life in Latin America's rapidly growing cities.

Le Bureau de la Banque Africaine de Développement en Tanzanie, le Centre de Développement de l'OCDE et le gouvernement Italien ont rassemblé des représentants des décideurs politiques travaillant dans le secteur du développement enTanzanie, pour discuter de l'avenir de l'agriculture dans le pays et sur le continent en général. Le séminaire qui s’est tenu à Dar-es-Salam, a permis aux experts agricoles et aux économistes de discuter avec les invités sur les crises alimentaire et pétrolière actuelles entre autres, et sur les obstacles pour accroître la productivité agricole dans la région.

The African Development Bank Tanzania Office, the OECD Development Centre and the Italian government gathered representatives from Tanzania's development policy making community to discuss the future of agriculture in the country and on the continent as a whole. Held in Dar es Salaam, the seminar's brought agriculture experts and economists to discuss with guests, among other issues, the current food and oil crises and obstacles to increasing agricultural productivity in the region.

OECD Development Centre Economist Federica Marzo and Head of Publications and Media Colm Foy travelled to Jerusalem for the "Israel and the African Green Revolution" conference at the Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs. At the meeting, Marzo discussed the findings of the 2008 African Economic Outlook and their implications for the continent's agricultural sector. Israel is one of three new members of the Development Centre and the conference provided an opportunity to strengthen the growing relationship between the Centre, government, local researchers and experts.

This meeting generated critical feedback on ongoing work for the Development Centre’s agenda on migration, gathered new insights from both academia and field practitioners and provided a platform for dialogue on key issues surrounding migration and development.
