Making Greek Development Assistance more effective

Greek official development assistance was USD 508 million, amounting to 0.17% of its national income, in 2010. By volume, this represents a 28% fall over the past 2 years. In its Review of the Development Co-operation Policies and Programmes of Greece, the DAC recognises the constraints the country is facing and makes recommendations that will help Greece build a modern aid system.

Environment: Climate change aid up to USD 22.9 billion in 2010, says OECD’s Gurría

New data show that the member countries of the OECD Development Assistance Committee (DAC) allocated up to USD 22.9 billion, or 15% of total official development assistance (ODA), to climate change mitigation and adaptation in developing countries in 2010.

Release of the 2011-2012 Southeast Asian Economic Outlook

Growth for the six Southeast Asian economies, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Viet Nam, will be 5.0% in 2011, and is projected to be 5.6% during 2012- 2016, 2% lower than in 2010.

According to OECD’s latest analysis, global greenhouse gas emissions are projected to double in the next 40 years. This would result in a 3-6 degree increase of the average global temperature by the end of the century unless governments take decisive action.

Non-Tariff Measures in Food and Agriculture: which road ahead?

The OECD and the International Food & Agricultural Trade Policy Council are pleased to announce an international seminar on NTMs to take place at the OECD in Paris. The discussion among high-level experts from governments, international organizations, the private sector, academic institutions and civil society organizations will address, among others, the question of acheiving greater transparency and improved policy coherence for development on both existing and planned NTMs.

Seminar "Inequality, Poverty and Public Policies in Latin America"

Nora Lustig (Tulane University, Center for Global Development and Inter-American Dialogue) presented her latest research on poverty, inequality and public policies in Latin America at a Seminar organised by the Development Centre on 11 July at the OECD Headquarters. Decreasing returns to education and targeted conditional cash transfers contribute to explain the bulk of the reduction of inequality in Argentina, Brazil, Mexico and Peru during the last decade. Latin American Economic Outlook Presented at the Central Bank of Lima, Peru on 13 June

The region’s macro-economic outlook and the role of the middle classes in Latin America’s development are discussed by Jeff Dayton-Johnson and Angel Melguizo at the the Central Bank of Peru on 13 June 2011, based on the Latin American Economic Outlook 2011. The report shows that, contrary to expectations, Latin America’s middle sectors are still economically vulnerable, few have university degrees and many work in informal employment.

Fiscal Policy Seminar in Mexico City, Mexico, 9-10 June

The OECD Development Centre, the Ibero-American Secretariat, the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean and the Government of Mexico co-organise a policy dialogue event to discuss fiscal policy in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Morocco: Launch of the business climate development strategy

To support Morocco in boosting jobs and investment, the OECD has assessed the country’s business climate and targeted key areas for reform. This report was launched in Rabat, Morocco, on 8 June by the Moroccan Minister of Economic and General Affairs, Nizar Baraka, and OECD Deputy Secretary-General Richard Boucher.

Conference: Improving Security and Development in Conflict-Affected Situations

The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, OECD and the World Bank co-hosted on 27 April an international conference to formulate practical recommendations for policy implementation and programming by international and national actors in conflict-affected and fragile situations. The meeting was also an occasion to present the recently released World Development Report 2011: Conflict, Security and Development.
