Earthquake in Haiti

The catastrophic earthquake that struck Haiti on 12 January 2010 has levelled Port-au-Prince, inflicting enormous pain in the poorest country in Latin America and the Caribbean.  It is a terrible blow to the cause of development in the region, in a country that has inspired unusual collective action among its Latin American neighbours. This collective action must be mobilised to aid Haiti in its rebuilding, recovery and future development.

Do No Harm: International Support for Statebuilding

Africa: Taxing its way out of aid dependence?

The OECD Development Centre, the African Development Bank and the UN Economic Commission for Africa gathered experts in Paris to discuss public resource mobilization and its role in reducing Africa’s dependence on external financial flows especially aid. Academics, development practitioners and experts from Africa and OECD used the December 14th meeting to debate the extent and sustainability of taxation’s contribution to Africa’s development. The discussions will provide inputs to the 2010 African Economic Outlook, which will be launched in May in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

The Asian Drivers and Africa: now available online in The World Economy

The World Economy mini-symposium, co-edited by Development Centre economists, presents findings about the economic impact of China and India in Saharan African countries by Africa-based economists. ‘The Asian Drivers and Africa’ presents case studies on Angola, Ethiopia, Kenya, Senegal and South Africa. These papers form part of a broader Development Centre project which documents the economic, political and social impacts of the two Asian giants on sub-Saharan African countries.

In the lead-up to COP15, there have been renewed calls for developed countries to assist developing countries’ efforts to reduce their greenhouse gases emissions. Recent OECD data show that in 2007 official development assistance (ODA) targeting climate change mitigation amounted to approximately USD 3.8 billion, accounting for 0,4 percent of total bilateral ODA that year.

The Dominican Republic joins the OECD Development Centre

The OECD Development Centre welcomed on Wednesday 3 November the Dominican Republic as its 39th member country. Speaking at OECD headquarters on this occasion, President Leonel Fernández said “Joining the Development Centre is going to be of crucial help in defining the policies for our national development.” The first Caribbean member of the Centre, the Dominican Republic is already playing an active role in our work. In particular, it is helping us set up a policy network that brings together OECD and Latin American experts.
