PEB will organise a school earthquake safety review in which governments from OECD and non-OECD countries, including individual provinces and states, are invited to participate. The review will be composed of a self-evaluation questionnaire and an optional review visit conducted by a team of experts to interested countries.

Building Schools for the Future is an ambitious programme to rebuild or refurbish all secondary schools in England over a 15-year period at a cost of GBP 45 billion. This report outlines the programme's aspirations and asks whether enough is being done to design, build and maintain schools. It presents environmentally sustainable development initiatives and asks crucial questions to determine if the schools being built will meet education needs in future years. It addresses the dual meaning of “sustainable development” and whether better planning can “future proof”our schools.

GeoHazards International is working with the staff of Ludlow Castle School and local New Delhi engineers to provide an earthquake-safe learning environment for this government school’s students. The programme is part of a larger pilot project supported by the governments of India and the United States to build local capacity to reduce the risks posed by existing buildings with inadequate earthquake resistance.

The UK Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE) will establish a new panel to help local authorities deliver well-designed schools. The new panel will consider the designs from every construction team bidding to build or refurbish secondary schools. The CABE panel will assess their proposals and provide an evaluation to each local authority. CABE will also provide expert support and advice to local authorities leading up to the assessment.

Quebec has just published a best practice guide to maintaining ventilation systems, aimed at the physical resources managers of the network of school boards. This 64-page document, which is tailored to the school environment, is now available in PDF format on the Quebec Ministry of Education, Leisure and Sport website.

It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to John Mayfield who passed away last November in Australia. John was chairman of the PEB Steering Committee from 1985 to 1988, and he remained an active supporter of our work. John will be remembered for his charismatic personality and important contribution to education both in Australia and worldwide and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

PEB Launches Facility Performance Evaluation Pilot Study

In 2007, PEB will launch a Facility Performance Evaluation Pilot Study, involving five countries. The broad purpose of this pilot study is to provide key stakeholders in educational facilities with tools, information and analyses to evaluate quality in relation to their facilities’ capacity to enrich and facilitate the educational process.
