Welcoming the adoption of the Framework for Strong, Sustainable and Balanced Growth by G20 leaders gathered in Pittsburgh for the G20 summit, OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurría said new sources of jobs and growth needed for the global economy to effect a sustained recovery, will only emerge if the right structural policies are adopted by the world’s leading global economies.

OECD roundtable for cities and regions on 10-11 September brought together almost 100 representatives from cities and regions involved in the second round of Reviews of Higher Education in Regional and City Development. It provided an opportunity to highlight the experiences of the Bio Bio Region in Chile which was the first region to undergo the review in August 2009. In addition, 5 new regions – Free State in South Africa, Valparaiso in Chile, Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, New England in the US and Oulu in Finland – introduced themselves. The OECD Programme on Institutional Management in Higher Education (IMHE) is looking for contributions for their What Works Conference on Quality of Teaching in Higher Education, 12-13 October 2009. This is a valuable opportunity for researchers, practitioners, academic leaders, students, educational developers, quality units and heads of services to showcase their experiences and research in the field. International conference on Higher Education at a Time of Crisis: Challenges and Opportunities, 29-30 June

OECD’s Programme on Institutional Management in Higher Education announces plans for a conference on the impact of the economic crisis on higher education institutions on 29-30 June hosted by the Copenhagen Business School in co-operation with OECD/IMHE.
The conference will debate questions of supply and demand, costs and income in higher education and will analyse the role and responsibility of higher education institutions and how to transform these challenges into opportunities.

In today’s knowledge-driven economy, higher education is a major driver of economic competitiveness. OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurría will participate in a panel discussion focusing on value for money in higher education. Other sessions of the conference will cover such topics as Assessing Learning and Employment Outcomes and Reputation and Ranking – the impact on institutional strategy and behaviour of international ranking tables.
