Paraná is one of the most prosperous states in Brazil and has invested in higher education, science and technology, and public-private partnerships. This publication explores how the higher education sector  in Paraná can promote business formation, develop the existing industry and small and medium-sized enterprises and address the long-term challenges of poverty and inequality.

State of Penang: Review of Higher Education in Regional and City Development is now available

Penang is one of Malaysia’s most industrial states. Its long-term economic growth has been based on manufacturing and foreign direct investments. Strong dependence on multinational corporations has brough growth and development but also an underdeveloped local industry, limited indigenous innovation and a lack of dynamic new entrepreneurship. This report explores how Penang can move up in the value chain, away from manufacturing to knowledge-driven economy.

Bío Bío Region: Review of Higher Education in regional development is now available in Spanish

The Spanish version of the OECD World Bank Bío Bío review report has just been published. The Bío Bío Region has a high concentration of higher education and research activity. Its universities and higher education institutions have made significant progress in widening access to education. But the Bío Bío Region continues to suffer from brain drain as well as higher than average unemployment and poverty rates. This joint OECD and World Bank review explores a range of helpful policy measures and institutional reforms to mobilise higher education for the development of the Bío Bío Region.

The next "What Works" event is a conference that will take place on 5-6 December 2011 at CETYS University, Mexicali, Mexico. The Conference will reflect on the findings of the IMHE institutional reviews on quality teaching (underway) and discuss broader issues on institution-wide and national policies supporting quality of teaching and learning in higher education.

OECD Roundtable on Higher Education in Regional and City Development

This event attracted 90 participants from 23 countries, including representatives from HEIs, regional governments, OECD country delegations, OECD and international organisations such as the EU, UNESCO IIEP, World Bank and Lumina Foundation. The meeting provided opportunities for shared learning between the cities and regions taking part in the OECD reviews of HE in regional and city development to discuss the key issues arising from the reviews, such as widening access and talent attraction, regional innovation, Green Growth and urban regeneration. OECD Final Conference on Higher Education in Cities and Regions

This conference will bring together representatives, mainly from universities and national, regional and local governments from the participating regions and will launch the final synthesis report of the second round of the OECD reviews of Higher Education in Regional and City Development. This international conference will be jointly organised with the Regional Government of Andalusia and the University of Seville.
