Experts discussed the role of space technologies in food security (Nov. 2009)

As part of an ongoing IFP case study on the societal role of space technologies, some 25 experts from international organisations and the space community discussed trends and challenges in global food supplies, and examined the potential role of space applications (e.g. imagery for agriculture monitoring, use of GPS supporting fisheries and sea transport). Governance of the Earth observation infrastructure: inputs from OECD / IFP (11 May 2009)

The OECD IFP was invited to present its findings on the space infrastructure, at the GMES Governance workshop organised by the EARSC and EUROSPACE associations, in cooperation with the European Commission's GMES Bureau and the European Economic and Social Committee in Brussels. New Publication: Space Technologies and Climate Change

This book examines space technologies' contributions in tackling some of the serious problems posed by climate change.  It underlines the need to consider satellites not just as research and development systems, but as an important component of a critical communication- and information-based infrastructure for modern societies. In September 2007, the OECD Global Forum on Space Economics issued an innovative 35-page report “Monitoring of the OECD Space Project Recommendations”. This document briefly reviews recent developments in the space sector (spring 2005-spring 2007) through the prism of the OECD IFP recommendations presented in the publication “Space 2030: Tackling Society’s Challenges”.

The management of the world’s water resources is set to become one of the most important issues of the 21st century. In that context, a case study is being conducted within the framework of the OECD Forum on Space Economics. The objective is to explore the general capabilities of space technology to enhance water resource management, and see what space systems have generated so far in terms of  socio-economic benefits and added-value in water management.  The preliminary findings presented here are mainly based on existing literature and meetings with practitioners.

Beyond the traditional scientific and military, how can space applications help with the range of challenges facing our societies today ? - security, the environment, disaster relief, health, education, communications, remedying the digital divide, transport... How can space help with the economy? In 2002 the IFP launched a project  to investigate the economic dimensions of space activities, and how space technologies could contribute to finding solutions to Earth’s problems.

Le secteur spatial pendant la crise économique: présentation lors du "Toulouse Space Show"

Le Programme de l'OCDE sur l'Avenir présentera des statistiques récentes sur le secteur spatial lors du "Toulouse Space Show", un grand congrès organisé par la communauté spatiale tous les deux ans.

Rencontre entre économistes et spécialistes sur les statistiques du secteur spatial (mars 2010)

La 4ème réunion du Comité Technique sur "l'économie spatiale" (Technical Committee on the Space Economy) a eu lieu le 23 mars 2010 à Paris, dans le cadre des rencontres de printemps de la Fédération Astronautique Internationale (IAF). Ce comité réunit biannuellement des économistes et experts du secteur, dont le Programme de l'OCDE sur l'Avenir, pour comparer des pratiques nationales et privées dans la collecte de données économiques du secteur spatial. Une session sur ce thème aura lieu lors du grand congrès annuel de l'IAF à Prague, fin septembre 2010.

"Space Technologies and Climate Change" presented at the United Nations (Feb. 2009)

The OECD IFP was invited to present its work on the global Earth observation infrastructure (summarised in the publication “Space Technologies and Climate Change”) at the IAF Symposium on "The role of Earth observation satellites in promoting understanding and addressing climate change concerns". The event was held at the United Nations in Vienna, during the forty-sixth session of the Scientific and Technical Subcommittee of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space. OECD ministers to discuss climate change, trade and global economy at annual meeting, Paris, 4-5 June

The economic impact of climate change, trade, growth and development issues will be discussed at the OECD’s annual ministerial meeting, in Paris on 4-5 June 2008. Working Group - 5th meeting: indicators and statistics on the space economy

The OECD Forum on Space Economics Working Group met in Paris on February 19th. The main theme of discussions concerned indicators and statistics on the space economy (definition…). Working Group members particularly encouraged the development of an innovative OECD Working Paper entitled “The Guide to Measuring the Space Economy”, to become available in summer 2008.

Global Forum on Space Economics: 1st Meeting of the Steering Group

On 16 and 17 February 2006, the Steering Group of the OECD Global Forum on Space Economics met to discuss the directions of work of the Forum. The Steering Group is composed of representatives of space agencies and ministries, in line with the intergovernmental nature of OECD Forums. A companion Working Group will be launched in June which will include representatives of the private sector and other interested parties.
