Sweden’s 2008 reform of its labour migration policy, now one of the most open in the OECD, has helped businesses hire foreign workers quickly and cheaply, without hurting conditions for local workers, according to a new OECD report.

This new book focuses on the role of growth and employment/unemployment developments in explaining recent income inequality trends in Brazil, China, India and South Africa, and discusses the roles played by labour market and social policies in both shaping and addressing these inequalities. It includes the papers presented at the joint OECD and European Union High-Level Conference on Inequalities in Emerging Economies held in Paris in May 2010. This work is part of OECD’s ongoing dialogue and co-operation with non-member economies around the world.

Welcoming the adoption of the Framework for Strong, Sustainable and Balanced Growth by G20 leaders gathered in Pittsburgh for the G20 summit, OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurría said new sources of jobs and growth needed for the global economy to effect a sustained recovery, will only emerge if the right structural policies are adopted by the world’s leading global economies.

The OECD Employment, Labour and Social Affairs Directorate and the OECD Development Centre jointly organised a seminar on "Employment outcomes and inequality: New evidence, Links and Policy responses in Brazil, China and India" which took place on the 8th April 2009 at the OECD Conference Centre. Based on an in-depth assessment of labour market trends in each of these countries, the seminar discussed policy options towards more and better jobs.

The topic of the integration of immigrants is a particularly important one in these challenging times as OECD countries grapple with the economic and financial crisis and the rapid rise of unemployment. Integration is difficult even in good times, so we need to double our efforts to manage it well in bad times.

OECD employment and labour ministers will meet on 28-29 September to discuss how labour market and social policies can best help workers and low-income households weather the storm of the current jobs crisis. The Ministerial meeting will be preceded by a Policy Forum on the morning of 28 September. The Forum will provide an opportunity for Ministers to share their views on these important issues with the social partners, researchers, representatives of civil society and journalists.

The OECD and the European Centre for Social Welfare Policy and Research organised on 6 and 7 March 2003 a conference to discuss disability policies for the working-age population. The conference addressed key problems in disability policy, and discussed OECD recommendations on how to tackle them as outlined in the forthcoming publication "Transforming Disability into Ability". The main policy recommendations from the publication formed the basis for the thematic sessions.
