Health spending continues to rise in OECD countries and, if current trends continue, governments will need to raise taxes, cut spending in other areas or make people pay more out of their own pockets in order to maintain their existing healthcare systems, new OECD data indicate.

The OECD has just released two OECD Health Working Papers from the Health Care Quality Indicators Project. Health Care Quality Indicators Project Initial Indicators Report (OECD Health Working Papers No. 22) reports on the methods and findings from the analysis of an initial set of quality indicators across 23 participating OECD countries. Health Care Quality Indicators Project Conceptual Framework Paper (OECD Health Working Papers No. 23) presents the project conceptual framework.

This volume contains a selection of the policy studies constituting the OECD Health Project, including: an assessment of the experience with health-system reforms across the OECD area; an investigation of recent attempts to monitor and improve quality of care in OECD countries; an analysis of equity in use of health-care services; a study of imbalances in the supply and demand for doctors and nurses; a comparison of policies to tackle excessive waiting times for elective surgery; an evaluation of the impact of different types of private health insurance on health-system performance; and new projections on the impact of ageing on health and long-term care expenditure.
