The LEED Programme was invited to present this publication in the Forum on 3 November. Longstanding expert and partner, Ray Boshara, presented the main ideas of this topic and some good practices analysed in selected OECD countries. This book is available in English, French, Italian and Spanish.

Extending asset-building policies to the poor can represent an effective attack on both poverty and economic and social alienation of the poor, because it has positive welfare effects that income support alone cannot provide. This book establishes the context for a fruitful debate on the merits and demerits of asset building for the poor by setting out the basic ideas involved in asset-building programmes and proposals. In the framework of the Bologna Process, the Working Party on SMEs & Entrepreneurship, in close co-operation with the LEED Programme and other OECD bodies, developed 4 themes and 2 cross-cutting issues, which constituted the core agenda for the Second OECD Ministerial Conference on SMEs held in Istanbul.

This study analyses the economic and social policies to foster labour market or overall social integration of immigrants and of persons of immigrant descent in host countries. Five country studies have now taken place in Canada, Italy, Spain, Switzerland and the UK.

The seminar was organised by Unidea UniCredit Foundation in collaboration with the OECD LEED Programme, CoDe Joint European Master in Comparative Local Development (University of Trento), EUROREG – Centre for European Regional and Local Studies (Warsaw University). The event discussed regional diversity and local development in Central and Eastern Europe, the opportunities for both public and private actors to actively contribute to the improvement of local realities, and the regional and European context of such local strategies.
