OECD Mexico Forum - Asset Building and the Escape from Poverty

The LEED Programme was invited to present this publication in the Forum on 3 November. Longstanding expert and partner, Ray Boshara, presented the main ideas of this topic and some good practices analysed in selected OECD countries. This book is available in English, French, Italian and Spanish.

New Publication: Asset Building and the Escape from Poverty: A New Welfare Policy Debate

Extending asset-building policies to the poor can represent an effective attack on both poverty and economic and social alienation of the poor, because it has positive welfare effects that income support alone cannot provide. This book establishes the context for a fruitful debate on the merits and demerits of asset building for the poor by setting out the basic ideas involved in asset-building programmes and proposals. Global Knowledge Flows and Economic Development - Just Released!

This publication examines how national and regional governments and development agencies can increase economic competitiveness by promoting connections to global knowledge flows. Conference on Skills Upgrading, Copenhagen, Denmark, 18 June 2004

This event examined both the key instruments put in place and discussed the ways to improve local practices to enhance the skills of low-skilled workers.  The conference gathered together more than 100 participants from all OECD countries. New program on the integration of immigrants on the labour market

The LEED Programme and the Non-Member Economies and International Migration Division (NEIM) have launched a joint activity related to the analysis of economic and social policies to foster labour market or overall social integration of immigrants and of persons of immigrant descent in host countries.

Seminar on Building Local Partnerships in the Balkans, Tirana, Albania, 22-23 April 2004

4th International Conference on Entrepreneurship: Contexts, Locales and Values - Paris, 22-24 September 2004

The 4th conference of the International Entrepreneurship Forum (IEF) was jointly organised by the OECD LEED Programme, the University of Essex and the University of Paris Dauphine, France. This event provided for research based insights and a forum for the sharing of experience by policy makers and practitioners.

The Second OECD Ministerial on SMEs, Istanbul, Turkey, 4-5 June 2004

In the framework of the Bologna Process, the Working Party on SMEs & Entrepreneurship, in close co-operation with the LEED Programme and other OECD bodies, developed 4 themes and 2 cross-cutting issues, which constituted the core agenda for the Second OECD Ministerial Conference on SMEs held in Istanbul.

LEED activity: Local Integration of Immigrants into the Labour Market

This study analyses the economic and social policies to foster labour market or overall social integration of immigrants and of persons of immigrant descent in host countries.  Five country studies have now taken place in Canada, Italy, Spain, Switzerland and the UK. 

Conference on Integrated Strategies for Local Development: International Experiences, Ancona, Italy, 5 April 2004

This conference was organised by the Marche Region in partnership with the OECD LEED Programme. The aim was to present the Strategic Regional Agenda for the Local Territorial Development (ARSTEL for its Italian acronym), which is an innovative tool for integrated development, recently approved by the Marche Region. For more information, please contact Lucy.Clarke@oecd.org

Conference on "Social Enterprises in an Evolving Economy: From Non-Profit Organisations to Social Enterprises", Bucharest, Romania

This international conference discussed the current policy framework and recent developments pertinent to social enterprises in the OECD, and explored the potential of social enterprises in Central and Eastern European countries and in Romania in particular.

Festival of Economics - “Human Capital, Social Capital”, Trento, Italy

The city of Trento hosted for the second time the Festival of Economics which focused this year on issues related to human and social capital.  The event was organised in cooperation with the OECD Trento Centre for Local Development.

Regional Diversity and Local Development in Central and Eastern Europe, Warsaw, Poland

The seminar was organised by Unidea UniCredit Foundation in collaboration with the OECD LEED Programme, CoDe Joint European Master in Comparative Local Development (University of Trento), EUROREG – Centre for European Regional and Local Studies (Warsaw University). The event discussed regional diversity and local development in Central and Eastern Europe, the opportunities for both public and private actors to actively contribute to the improvement of local realities, and the regional and European context of such local strategies.

Seminar on "Trade unions and welfare", Trento, Italy

This seminar was organised in cooperation with INAS CISL and Fondazione Giulio Pastore. The event  presented and discussed the results of research addressing these issues undertaken in eight European countries: Italy, Spain, France, Germany, Belgium, Great Britain, Sweden and Poland.

Conference "Let’s Go4Growth. Local Strategies for the Growth of Global Companies", Barcelona, Spain

This conference was an attempt to provoke practical reflection and generate proposals that will help define local strategies for the growth of companies with projections for the future. It was promoted and organised by Barcelona Activa with the support of CIDEU, EBN, IASP and the OECD LEED Programme.

Roundtable on "Enterprise Development and Investment Climate in Ukraine", Kiev, Ukraine

The objective of the roundtable was to present the main findings of the joint EC-OECD project carried out in 2004-2006 and to discuss the related policy recommendations with Ukrainian representatives. The meeting was co-hosted by the UNDP. 

International Entrepreneurship Forum (IEF), Riga, Latvia

The 6th IEF conference will address the theme “New Ventures and the Creative Trajectory: Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Creativity in Business”.  This event is a collaborative venture between the Riga International School for Economics and Business Administration, the University of Essex Southend, and the OECD LEED Programme.

Seminar on Emerging models of social entrepreneurship: possible paths for social enterprise development in Central East and South East Europe, Zagreb, Croatia

The objective of this seminar was to disseminate and discuss recent regulatory policies that define new forms of social entrepreneurship and to assess their relevance and applicability potential in OECD member and non-member countries of Central East and South East Europe.

Conference on “Developing the Social Economy”, Paris

This event aimed at discovering and sharing the “good practices” on guiding the development of the social entrepreneurship in several OECD and Eastern-European countries.  It was organised by the LEED Programme in partnership with Avise.

Capacity building seminar on “Building Development Strategies for Cities and Regions”, Trento, Italy

This 5-day capacity building seminar will focus on the local development strategy design and implementation and more specifically it will emphasize the role of strategy in integrating different drivers, factors and enablers of local economic development. This event will bring together 60 experienced policy makers and practitioners from Central, East and South East Europe working in the area of regional and local development strategy building.
