OECD Regions at a Glance 2007 highlights healthcare

OECD's biennial Regions at a Glance gives comparative statistics  for OECD countries, and regions within each country,  related to economic indicators such as  concentration of population, GDP and employment rates as well as indicators of well-being such as the distance to a major centre, reported crimes, rate of homeownership and educational attainment.

The international conference on "What Policies for Globalising Cities? Rethinking the Urban Policy Agenda",  co-organised by the OECD and the Spanish authorities, will be held 29-30 March 2007 at the Municipal Congress Hall, in Campo de las Naciones, Madrid. It will bring together government leaders, policy makers and practitioners to examine urban policy in the context of globalisation and the growing challenges for cities.

OECD Territorial Reviews: The Mesoamerican Region: Southeastern Mexico and Central America

The Central American economic integration process, which dates back to the 1950s, entered a new era in 2001 with the launching of the Puebla Panama Plan. This plan helped shift the focus to the greater “Mesoamerican region” (MAR), which includes the seven Central American countries plus the nine southeastern states of Mexico. In this context, the OECD Territorial Review of the Mesoamerican Region marks two major firsts: a comprehensive regional development study of the entire Mesoamerican region and the OECD’s first ever multi-national territorial review.

Study on the Montreal metropolitan region

As one of Canada’s most economically competitive cities, Montreal faces competition from other major North American metropolitan regions such as Toronto and Philadelphia. The forthcoming study on Montreal will address the competitiveness and governance questions facing this metropolitan region.

The Metropolitan Montreal study by OECD addresses the competitiveness and governance questions facing this metropolitan region. It shows that despite significant progress in terms of employment and growth, Montreal ranks only 44th in regards to real GDP per capita out of the 65 largest OECD metropolitan regions due to a lower level of productivity. Montreal will have to co-ordinate and streamline its local and metropolitan governance if it hopes to become a player in the competitive world of international business.

The Territorial Review of the Czech Republic

The Territorial Review of the Czech Republic analyses growth factors and obstacles to territorial development in that country, with specific recommendations in different areas.  It takes into account the unique geographic location of the Czech Republic, in the heart of the new Europe, and the promising signs of development of major urban centres but also of medium sized towns acting as economic and service hubs for surrounding rural areas.

The OECD hosted an international workshop on “Defining and Measuring Metropolitan Regions” on 27 November 2006 in Paris. The workshop brought together major international organisations, National Statistical Offices and researchers from this field.
