The purpose of this Issue Paper that has been developed by the OECD BioPesticides Steering Group, is to highlight current international microbial contaminant criteria on food and drinking water and to encourage discussions among OECD member countries on the acceptable levels of microbial contamination in microbial pest control products. A compilation of methods available for screening microbial pest control products for the presence of pathogens and other micro-organism contaminants are referenced for guidance to regulatory authorities and applicants/notifiers alike.

This report presents the results of an OECD Seminar (Paris, May 2010) on biopesticide issues related to the fate in the environment of microbial biological control agents (mBCAs) and their effects on non-target organisms (NTOs), an issue of interest to OECD member countries’ governments. The objectives of the Seminar were manifold and sought to 1/ identify key issues & challenges, 2/ provide updates of national & international activities, and 3/ suggest options for OECD countries and key stakeholders in the area of the fate in the environment of mBCAs and their effects on NTOs.

Crop Field Trials (also referred to as supervised field trials) are conducted to determine the magnitude of the pesticide residue in or on raw agricultural commodities, including feed items, and should be designed to reflect pesticide use patterns that lead to the highest possible residues. While the OECD Guideline for the Testing of Chemicals on Crop Field Trial (TG 509, in September 2009) provides a harmonized approach to conducting and reporting crop field trials in OECD countries, this Guidance Document will help in planning the trials in OECD countries and in interpreting the results.
