Representatives of OECD member countries and China met in Beijing to review China's environmental performance, in the first official meeting of a formal OECD Committee to take place in China. A speech by OECD's Deputy Secretary-General, Kiyo Akasaka, on this occasion is also available. Agreed conclusions and recommendations will be reflected in the OECD Environmental Performance Review of China to be released in Spring 2007.

Korea should use energy more efficiently and control green house gas emissions more effectively, according to a new OECD report. While the OECD welcomes Korea’s significant progress in tackling environmental challenges over the past decade, it notes that further steps are needed in the interests both of international environmental cooperation and Korea’s economic development.

A new OECD review of environmental policy in the US recommends more efficient use of energy and water as a way to safeguard economic prosperity while protecting the environment and human health. A new OECD report on the Czech Republic’s environmental performance notes that despite some recent progress, the country is one of the biggest polluters and least efficient users of energy in the OECD. Since 1998, public and private spending on environmental problems has been drastically reduced and much progress is needed to achieve the economic and health benefits of a clean environment.

This book is part of the OECD Environmental Performance Reviews Programme which conducts peer reviews of environmental conditions and progress in each Member country. It scrutinises efforts to meet both domestic objectives and international commitments. The analyses presented are supported by a broad range of economic and environmental data and lead to recommendations for further environmental and sustainable development progress. A first cycle of Environmental Performance Reviews, covering all Member countries was completed in 2000.

Further to the publication of the Conclusions and Recommendations last February, the full report is released on 26 September 2005. The need to manage pollution, natural resources add biodiversity in France continues to be a major challenge. The OECD Environmental Performance Review of France highlights the effectiveness of the environmental policy pursued by France, but also focuses on the need for better integration of environmental concerns into sectors such as energy, transport and agriculture.

A new OECD report on Chile’s environmental performance recognises significant environmental improvements over the past decade. While the report broadly supports the environmental policies and programmes of the Chilean government, it also urges further efforts to protect the country’s environment and natural resources in the face of rapid economic growth.
