Ireland : OECD releases Environmental Performance Review

OECD’s Environmental Performance Review of Ireland recommends strengthening efforts to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, charging households for consumption of water, and encouraging public participation in environmental decision-making.

Finland has reduced pollution but must now green the economy

Finland has reduced pollution and improved its environmental quality through pioneering approaches like green taxes. However, it must do more to green its economy by reducing the amount of energy and materials used per unit of GDP, tackling climate change, and addressing health impacts of pollution and management of waste.

Environmental Performance Reviews: China (2007)

A new OECD report assessing China's environmental performance encourages China to redouble efforts to improve its environment to achieve sustainable economic growth. The report, which makes 51 specific recommendations, builds on more than a decade of OECD-China co-operation and is based on the same review methodology used for environmental reviews of all OECD countries.

Environmental Performance Reviews: Switzerland (2007)

A new OECD report on Switzerland notes remarkable improvements in numerous areas of its environment including air, water, waste management but insists the country must better manage its natural resources, particularly biodiversity and land protection. The report makes 46 specific recommendations.
The report was released at a news conference on 11 May 2007, Schwellenmätteli, Bern at 10am by M. Leuenberger, Federal Councillor;  L. Lorentsen, OECD Environment Director;  B. Oberle,  Secretary of State for Environment; and C. Avérous, head of OECD’s national environmental reviews.

Environmental Performance Reviews: New Zealand (2007)

A new OECD report assessing New Zealand's environmental performance notes that the country has made good progress with its environmental policies but says further effort is needed in the agriculture, energy and transport sectors as well as with economic instruments. The report makes 38 recommendations for improving the country’s environmental performance in the coming years.

Environmental Performance Reviews: China (2006)

Representatives of OECD member countries and China met in Beijing to review China's environmental performance, in the first official meeting of a formal  OECD Committee to take place in China. A speech  by OECD's Deputy Secretary-General, Kiyo Akasaka, on this occasion is also available. Agreed conclusions and recommendations will be reflected in the OECD Environmental Performance Review of China to be released in Spring 2007.

OECD urges Korea to do more to protect the environment

Korea should use energy more efficiently and control green house gas emissions more effectively, according to a new OECD report. While the OECD welcomes Korea’s significant progress in tackling environmental challenges over the past decade, it notes that further steps are needed in the interests both of international environmental cooperation and Korea’s economic development.
