Culture and tourism, a growing importance

“Increasing the Attractiveness of Places through Cultural Resources” is a study completed by the OECD Tourism Committee. The main documents and case studies have been summarised in the publication "The Impact of Culture on Tourism".
Two follow-up seminars disseminated and explored the outcomes: “Culture and Tourism: A Strategic Partnership” in Mexico; and “A New Design for Tourism: Culture, Tourism and Creative Industries; Driving Forces for Local Development” in Austria.

But amid the current global downturn governments in Eastern Europe, as elsewhere, face stiffer challenges in supporting and nurturing new businesses.

Governments should do more to help SMEs expand abroad

Participants at a two-day OECD-APEC conference in Athens agreed that governments should play a more active role in helping small and medium-sized firms trying to expand abroad and provide training in key areas such as marketing and intellectual property.

Conference on "Insolvency and Fresh Start after Business Failure", Brussels

The DG Enterprise and Industry organised a Conference on Insolvency and Fresh Start after Business Failure in Brussels on 28th March 2006. The conference had a focus on bankruptcy prevention, tackling the stigma attached to business failure and promotion of a fresh start. The OECD Centre for Entrepreneurship, SMEs and Local Development presented the preliminary results of the OECD Policy Indicator Questionnaire on Bankruptcy.
