To celebrate the adoption of the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families in 1990, the UN General Assembly proclaimed the 18th of December as International Migrants Day. As shown by the work of the Development Centre, migrants continue to be an important factor to promote development in their countries' of origin.

In the framework of the 2009 session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), the Development Centre will launch a new composite index shedding light on inequalities that are based on social norms and traditions.

On 17-19 September, we participated in an international conference organised by the Böll Foundation (Germany). Our paper on "Migration Management: The Development Countries' Perspective" stimulated a lively debate on how to improve the development impact in migrant sending regions.

"Migration and Development: Policy Coherence and Effective Partnerships", organised at the 12th General Conference of EADI, took stock of what we know about the effects of migration on development. Participants shared their specific country or regional experiences to illustrate the mechanisms that link migration and development, in particular related to labour-market effects, the brain drain, remittances, diaspora networks and return migration.

In the framework of the OECD Breakfast Series, Johannes Jütting will present main findings on gender equality and development. The event, which will be hosted by the OECD Washington Centre, will discuss the link between gender equality and economic growth, the impact of social norms and culture on gender equality, and innovative ways to promote knowledge.
