The OECD has just released two OECD Health Working Papers from the Health Care Quality Indicators Project. Health Care Quality Indicators Project Initial Indicators Report (OECD Health Working Papers No. 22) reports on the methods and findings from the analysis of an initial set of quality indicators across 23 participating OECD countries. Health Care Quality Indicators Project Conceptual Framework Paper (OECD Health Working Papers No. 23) presents the project conceptual framework.

OECD opens in Seoul, Korea, its Regional Centre on Health & Social Policy

The purpose of the Centre, which opened on 9 September in Seoul, is to promote policy dialogue between OECD and non-member economies and to provide capacity-building assistance to the non-OECD Asian economies by information-sharing and policy analysis.

Efforts to support older persons remaining in their home are key to meet the care needs of ageing populations. Flexibility and choice can help this process. This working paper reviews how countries are implementing choice, including payments for informal care, and clarifies how such arrangements can improve care outcomes, employment and fiscal sustainability.

This volume contains a selection of the policy studies constituting the OECD Health Project, including: an assessment of the experience with health-system reforms across the OECD area; an investigation of recent attempts to monitor and improve quality of care in OECD countries; an analysis of equity in use of health-care services; a study of imbalances in the supply and demand for doctors and nurses; a comparison of policies to tackle excessive waiting times for elective surgery; an evaluation of the impact of different types of private health insurance on health-system performance; and new projections on the impact of ageing on health and long-term care expenditure.

The OECD Health Project commenced in 2001 and culminated with a Meeting of OECD Health Ministers on 13-14 May 2004, when the final report "Towards High-Performing Health Systems" was released. Health Working Papers on Health Reforms, Private Health Insurance, Waiting Times, and Equity of Access to care have been published.
