Massive rise in unemployment needs fast, decisive response, says OECD’s Gurria

“Governments need to take quick and decisive action to avoid the financial crisis becoming a fully-blown social crisis with scarring effects on vulnerable workers and low income households,” OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurría told G8 Labour and Employment Ministers in Rome today.

The topic of the integration of immigrants is a particularly important one in these challenging times as OECD countries grapple with the economic and financial crisis and the rapid rise of unemployment. Integration is difficult even in good times, so we need to double our efforts to manage it well in bad times.

Young people in Japan are finding it increasingly hard to get permanent jobs and the Japanese authorities should expand vocational training schemes and increase social security coverage for young non-regular workers in order to help them.

On many counts, the youth labour market in Norway is performing very well. The unemployment rate among young people aged 16-24 was 7.3% in 2007, 6 percentage points below the OECD average and the employment rate was almost 12 percentage points above the OECD average.
